2771.0. "Csound on DECaudio?" by FORTSC::CHABAN () Fri Nov 15 1991 13:03

Anyone know if someone has Csound running on DECaudio? My buddy Mr. Powell
at SGI says he and Barry Vercoe have had it on the Indigo for a while.

I keep trying to run it, but I can't get hardware (DS5000).
Our dept. is responsible for the firmware diags on DECaudio (and video).

It should work, but we're waiting on our production DECaudio
unit. Here's a note I got from Barry Vercoe last October 10
describing a beta release of a new version of Csound.

Subj: beta release of realtime MIDI Csound

Csound has recently sprouted several new features, including realtime
performance from midifiles, MPU401 files, and from a MIDI keyboard.
This latter via some MIDI-to-serial box (like Midiator) and into
a serial port at 38400. Seems to run fine on DECstations and SGI
machines, not so well on SUNs because of large audio output buffering.

The new version is still in BETA TEST, but if you'd like to try it,
it's in the csbeta subdirectory of the usual ftp (ems.media.mit.edu).
Untar and make in the usual way.

Inside, you'll find a new directory called midifiles, with its own README.
There are dozens of new midi-relevant generators, not yet documented in
my usual manual style, but described in sufficient detail to let you
start building things. Directory also contains several midi scores,
as examples you can krank up right away.

Realtime software synthesis (and realtime MIDI control of same) is practical
only on the faster machines. If you're at the ICMC, you likely see it on
things like the SGI Indigo. If you're home machine is a Mac, you should
keep to the previous version for now; we'll do another Mac port soon.
