2769.0. "The MIDIot asks ..." by MIZZOU::SHERMAN (ECADSR::Sherman DTN 223-3326) Tue Nov 12 1991 11:40

Dumb question. What exactly do AOR and GB stand for? Are there
multiple meanings? I hear/read these all the time but haven't really
seen a formal definition. I realize, of course, that my ignorance
discloses the fact that I'm not a ringer ...

"Ringer" is a slang term for professional musicians are hired in to
sweeten, shall we say, an ensemble of amateurs. This is what I am
told, so I could be off. The term may be derogatory.

AOR:== "Album Oriented Rock", like the stuff you'd hear on WAAF.

GB:== "General Business", weddings, Holiday Inn Lounges, etc. The
general dreck of being a working musician.

AC:== "Adult Contemporary", think about Phil Collins, Michael Bolton,
and a host of others who sing sappy tunes with a DX-7.

And I suppose "Album Oriented Rock," in turn, describes a metaphorical missile
customarily hurled by Tom Janzen and his ilk at anything smelling of AOR, AC,
and/or GB?

Hey, Tom, is Classic AOR an oxymoron? :^)

(For those who don't realize this, Tom is MUCH LOVED by us
Commusicer's. We rib him all the time, but can only do so because
besides being such a neat guy, an excellent musican, artist, and
bonafide technoguru, he's usually right ...)

And also, for those who don't realize it, I only omit the obligatory smiley-face
from light comments because I feel about the same way toward them as Tom does
towards pop rock...

Bob was obviously joking. "...Tom Janzen and his ilk..." Tom has no
    ilk. He is unique.
