2740.0. "Digital Canobie Outing MIDI band" by ELESYS::JASNIEWSKI (This time forever!) Fri Oct 04 1991 11:02

This note is for discussion of the Digital Canobie Lake Outing
gig. Specifically, the MIDI-band performance that is hired. Not
so much the job the band does, moreso the gig and reasons why
the audience reaction to these performers is so poor.

My girlfriend and I noticed this at the recent outing we attended.
Nobody was paying any real attention to these poor people, who were
up there singing and sequencing their hearts out. I mean, we really
felt for them - it was like they "weren't even there" as far as
the audience seemed. (They might was well have piped in the park
musak) They knew it too - and it must've really stung when they
had to synthesize their own applauses. We like "got it" that whoever
it was most probably wouldnt do _that_ gig again!

Anyone else notice this at the Canobie outings? Any ideas why
the rather complete lack of interest from the audience?

    	Joe

The band last year, also a midi'd band of one male and a female
were much better and and got quite a bit of reaction during the time
I was in there. The band this year was not as good and that may have
    been the problem.

Also they are under a tent and barely visable.

    that's my penny.

Well, the oompah band they had two years ago was ignored too. I'm not
sure why they hire anybody, as it's not like throngs of DECcies are
gonna boogie down on the lawn there.

Gee, I thought they were always volunteers. If they REALLY wanted a
show, they could've asked ... I mean, even *I* might actually set up
my stuff and play a few sequences.

I think there are several reasons (I remember the reaction last year as being
rather dead)

1. They are small and the area they are covering is large. Not only do you
not hear them unless you are close, but you don't get the feeling that you are
interacting with them if you are not packed in with them.

2. This is not what people are there for to being with

3. Most people are distracted with kids etc

I think (2) is especially important. It seems to me that it happens a lot with
"background music" bands in restaurants, DECUS shows, etc etc. People are
talking, not listening to music. When they stop it is sort of like "oh, what
just changed...I can suddenly hear you better"

    	Re .1-

Yeah, I noticed that the tent really obscured things - you couldnt
    see the keyboardist's head!

I recall I was interested in the technology, like, how was he
getting so much bass out of those little speakers?

I think the band is a background thing. They could just as easily put on
recorded music.

I listened cause I'm into music but getting food for the kids and taking
them on rides was much more important.

They 'band' was pretty good.....but not rock enough for my taste.

I've always felt that these MIDI bands were kind of boring
to watch. I mean, hen I hear drums and guitar and
keyboard I want to see someone playing them (I mean at
a performance). If you want background music they are ok
but they are not a show.
It didn't sound that bad though. I made it there before
	going to Munich.

To clarify more, Canobie Lake Park is an amusement park.
Digital "rents" it for a few weekends in September and October
for its annual family outing for MA and NH area employees
(and maybe others?). On these weekends the park is DEC only
and each facility is assigned a different day (or many smaller
	facilities share a day).

2740.12Canobie Lake bandsKOMRAD::FRANCKJIM - DTN 237-3436Fri Oct 11 1991 08:289
When I was at Canobie Lake this year (9/21) there was a male / female band
playing. I thought they were great - the audience was watching and applauding.
I can't remember the name of the band though.

This year they didn't have the barbershop chorus - at least not when I was there.
There's supposed to be a barbershop chorus in Nashua this year - has anyone
heard when it is?

The enthusiasm may have been due to the appreciation of the effort involved in
bringing together enough hermaphrodites (i.e., male/females) to form a band-
talk about valuing differences!

You mean the Granite Statesmen and the Dutch group they are hosting? I think
it is this weekend at Elm St Jr High. Don't know exactly which date/time.
