2697.0. "TASCAM 424/488/644/688 comparison" by FOO::BHAVNANI (SYS$UNWIND - laid back VMS) Thu Aug 15 1991 17:44

	I'm in the process of upgrading my trusty Porta 1 to an 8 track
	cassette format machine. I'm a little confused by note 2226,
	which (though very informative) seems to talk about the 644, 688
	and the 488.

	Just so I have my facts straight, could someone help in completing
	(and perhaps adding to) this table?

	           model    488      688      644      424
                            ---      ---      ---      ---
	  input channels    8 (1)    10 (2)   8 (3)    4
	          tracks    8        8        4        4
	          busses    4        4        4        4
	          speeds    A        A        ?        ABC
	            MIDI    No       Yes      ?        No
	         outputs    4                          4
	          meters    LCD      LED      ?        LCD
	          list $    1599     3299     ?        549
	          sell $    1187     2470     ?        450

	A = 3 3/4 ips     B = 1 7/8 ips     C = 15/16 ips

	Notes
	-----
	(1) Only 2 channels have gain trim.
	(2) Dual linkable inputs allow total of 20 input channels.
	(3) Dual linkable inputs allow total of 16 input channels.

	Comments
	--------
	688: Stores 99 signal routing "scenes".

2697.1you can never have enough tracks...EZ2GET::STEWARTBalanced on the biggest waveThu Aug 15 1991 18:159

    Ravi - the 644 is the four track version of the 688. It only has 4
    tracks and it lacks the meter bridge, but otherwise the capabilities
    are supposed to be the same. The 688 has individual track outputs as
    well as a stereo pair - don't know about the 644. The 688 also has
    more effects sends, I think. Maybe one of the other 688 users can
    remember what's on the back panel. Oh yeah, the 688 (and probably the
    644) allow the drive to sync to an external master.

    The 644 does, but the 488 does NOT and that's one of the biggest
    reasons stopping me from buying one (having no money for it is another
    but...).

Well that's to be expected, the 488 is a very scaled down version of the 688.
Looked a bit cheezy to me as well, but maybe that's 'cuz I have the 688..
