My question, I'm currently using an R-5 drum machine and an MC50 sequencer to write dance stuff. When doing the drums I basically put down a pattern in real time and I have the drum machine in Sync with the sequence so that when I press play the drum machine plays in time with what I have on the sequencer, how do I save the drums to disc so that I can free up some memory on the drum machine for more new patterns. I hope I said this right....................... Thanks Howard

I don't know details of the devices you have, but generally, if they support SYSex, couldn't you just dump the contents of the drum machine to the synth and then to disk ? Peter

Does the R5 have a MIDI buld dump feature? I'd be surprised if it doesn't. The MC50 can store a dump as well as rhythm patterns of its own. And, it can convert rhythm patterns to regular MIDI track info. But, unfortunately, it does not provide a mechanism for converting info from a track to rhythm patterns. It would have been clever of Roland to keep the rhythm pattern format standard so that they could be transferred between the R5 and the MC50. I *think* such transfers can be done over MIDI between an MC50 and another MC50 (don't quote me). Don't know about between an MC50 and an R5/R8. One alternative is to have the MC50 just record whole sections of MIDI data from the drums for different songs. Then, have the MC50 play the drums instead of using the R5s internal sequencer. But, then, don't you lose the "humanization" capabilities? I don't know what gets sent out MIDI during "humanization". If it's time shifting and AT then you'll be preserving the feel, though it will no longer vary each time you play the song, if I understand things. I don't have an R5, so usual disclaimers apply. Why not use the R-5 as an expander ? Play the drum parts via a keyboard and into the MC50 on a seperate track(s). Zayed

I think the problem with that is that you lose the "humanization" features of the R5 if you use (gasp!) a "human" to actually generate the info into the MC50 and then have the MC50 control the R5. However, this is the way that I do drum tracks a lot of the time. The MC50 is designed to pretty much replace much of the editing features of a typical drum machine. Steve |
