| No, Ed, a confusing user interface is having seven gazillion nested
menus and and functions and 4 pairs of buttons to do everything.
Kind of like the Kurzweil 1000 series..
I've seen nothing but good reviews on the JX-800 sounds and analog-style
interface. Heard one in a shop recently, sounded like a KAWAI K-series
unit to me - kind of between FM and LA synthesis.

Re: -1
Yeah, you're right, but the point I was making is that it looks like
the cockpit of a 747 compared to the minimalist stuff you see on most
machines.
I agree the thing is nice, but this "kind of FM & LA synthesis" is lost
on someone who grew up using patchcords and graduated to Prophet 5.
That's my take anyway...

It sounds almost too perfect, if you get what I mean. I can't describe
it any other way. It already sounds cliche.

I'm surprised that no "commusic-er" has posted a review yet. When I
get the time, I'll head down to the sleazeballs who sold me my
SoundCanvas and make 'em let me play with the thing for a while.
I'll post a review when I can.

| If you think the JX-800 is intimidating, take a look at the MPG-80
(programmer for the MKS-80 SuperJupiter) or the PG-1000 (programmer
for the D-50/550). In comparison the PG-800 (programmer for the JX-10,
probably about the same level of complexity as the JX-800) is
simplicity itself.

| Well, wonder of wonders, Roland has just released a *patch book* for
the JD-800. Haven't seen one of *those* in a while....is this 1971 or
1991? 8^) 8^)

| I'm considering this also. Any "reviwers" out there yet.
Guitar Center, Chicago, is listing it at approx $2800 but we all know
they are open to "suggestions". Can anyone out there give me a
"suggestion" to give them?

| I've tested the JD-800 a couple of times and i would compare
the quality of the sounds with the KORG Wavestation, BUT the JD
has ONLY 6 voices. The last 5 years the synth's have at least had
8 if not more. I dont know why they have made this, maybe some tech-
nical stuff, bu still....

2680.15 | For an analogue solo, 6 is enough. | STKHLM::ARENDI | Jaak A. CS/Via Stockholm | Sun Sep 08 1991 06:51 | 11 |
| reply .14 I think an analogue synth is ok with just 6 voices but a
brand new 1991 product, oh no. Roland claims that it is a 24 voice
synth but they always count on you just using one partial(timbre, part
whatever) and if you want those really fat sounds with all 4
partials involved --> 6 VOICES. Ok it sounds great but if you are the kind
of musician i am, ie the 90's sound wall a' la' Phil Spector 6 voices
ain't just enough. (my setting is Roland D50,U110,U220 and Yamaha TG55)
