2673.0. "Curiosity about MIDI equipment at American Stage Festival" by DECWIN::FISHER (Klingons don't "enter a relationship"...they conquer) Mon Jul 01 1991 13:35

I happened to catch the last performance of "Cole Porter's Malibu" at the
American Stage Festival in Milford NH last night. I was wondering if anyone
knew what kind of synth and sequencer they used.

They had an electronic piano (some variety of Kurzweil) at the front of the
pit, and then hiding underneath an barely visible was a person with a PC of
some sort (only the back visible), and eq, a box the size and shape of a D110,
and another thicker box.

I looked in carefully during intermission, but did not get to ask anything
at the end.

The sound was funny...the instruments sounded quite real, but without much
"zip". Almost like it was coming from a not-so-good tape. Also, the piano
sounds came from a much different location, and did not merge well with the
rest of the sound.

I suspect that maybe our seats (front row, left) were such that we heard mainly
the cue speakers on the stage and/or in the pit or else maybe it was just mixed
sort of poorly. It also seemed like they probably had the piano generating its
own sound (with its own speakers?) rather than going through the mixer.

But anyway, I was curious was to what synth they were using. Was it really
a D-110? Might they have used Cakewalk for the seq? It looked like the
operator was hitting "space" to stop it.
