I have a Yamaha MC802, JBL Power Amp and Electo-Voice 1510 speakers for a PA system. Yesterday I called American Music here in Seattle and told my sales rep that I thought the sound was very clean but "sterile" and that there was no punch below say 400 cycles. He recommended that I use a Barcus Berry Aural Exciter. I read the other notes regarding the subject and felt that in information was slightly dated. Does anyone have any suggestions or updates regarding the use of the BBE device to solve my prolem? Does anyone understand what I mean by sterile vs. warm sound?

I always thought those exciter things changed the high end, not the low end. A sterile sound is what I usually look for in an amplifer and speakers! If you want a different color to the sound, change what goes in. Maybe if I knew what "punch" was.... mumble mumble. | |||||

Re: .1 My understanding is that the Barcus Berry devise divides the signal comming out of your mixer into three ranges (High, Low and Mid). Time delays are introduced to create a sense of depth. Each of the ranges can also be brought up or down in volume. I invested in a Karaoke company and usually we are amplifying digial audio from a commercial laser disc player made by Pionner. I have also plugged my Carver CD player into the mixer as a reference and although there are tone controls on each channel, I can't seem to fix what I refered to as a sterile overall sound. To me punch means that the low end is Clean, Warm and Powerful. |
