What's the scoop on CD players using "one bit" DACs ? I've seen this term in several adverts lately. Yes, I could go to the CD conference but I'm more at home here !! thx karl

My impression (perhaps erroneous) is that they do very high speed serial (rather than parallel, hence "one bit") conversion. For some reason (perhaps some conversion weenie could enlighten us) this technology seems to have become more cost/performance effective. Maybe it's easier to make the clock 18 times as fast than to make the circuitry 18 times as wide? len. | |||||

I asked the same question a while ago, Karl, in another note, which specifically asked about one manufacturer's product for reliability. I'll tell you what, my impression of the 1-bit players I heard was that, using "the same chip set", the Sony implementation was grainy, and the Rotel (Phillips chips, etc.) was warm and "tuby" sounding. The actual sound of the CD's I tried was much better thatn say, the Denon 1560, etc. FWIW, Bill Message |
