2652.0. "Restoring Antique Recordings" by FORTSC::CHABAN () Tue May 28 1991 23:07

I noticed that Jens caught my postings in the AUDIO and
AUDIO_ENGINEERING notes file, but I figured I'd try here too...

Anyway, I have some nifty digital restorations of Caruso recordings
where Thomas Stockham removed the resonant effects of the mechanical
horn used in the acoustical recordings (Caruso died in 1921 and was
never recorded electrically) This was done on a PDP-11 some time ago.

Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead has been removing the pops and clicks
from early blues recordings with the DigiDesign stuff on a MacIntosh.
I've heard that Andy Moorer (of Lucasfilm SoundDroid fame) is also in
    this business.

    Does anyone have more info?

The pops and clicks aren't too hard to remove, as long as you've got a
high quality tape deck that'll do at least 15 ips, a sharp razor blade,
and a lot of patience. Stockham's efforts are a little harder to
    duplicate. *8')

2652.2NO-NOISE CDTKOV60::YAMAMOTO_ȥ󥫥ƯγڤߤWed May 29 1991 01:0413
I heard about NO-NOISE CD series from Phillips Record.
NO-NOISE system is on SUN workstation(or Macintosh),
It removes pop, click, ham or buzz, hiss noise from old
record(SP,or silinder,and so on.) automatically.
NO-NOISE CD series line-up contains old great conductor
or player's performance. (ex."Ravel conducts Ravel" (!!)
... Is spell correct?)

NO-NOISE system needs *VERY* long CPU time and HD capacity.
SUN workstation version needs 5,6, or 12 hours per one SP
disk,I heard.

I read in one of the more obscure music comix that a firm was founded in
Britain in order to get a contract to digitally restore music out of their
(BBC?can't recall) national archives. A bunch of Ccode, algorithms NOT
discussed, running on UNIX PC's - mentioned CD quality from ancient
lacquer masters - this is far above just removing clicks and pops - multiple
passes remove noise in specific bandwidths. Fascinating stuff. Also made
mention of creating stereo recordings from multiple mono masters (mics in
different parts of the sound stage) of the same performance... digital quality.

Gee, an Amiga with a sound digitizer and the more recent s/w
	is good enough to improve
really old recordings. I've put 3 minutes into memory, mono.
Hm. Unfortunately, this subject bores the crud out of me.

Being a bit more enthusiatic than Tom, I was wondering... Has anyone
tried to restore the fragments of Brahms playing Brahms? Aparently,
Edison recorded Bramhs playing some exerpts from his piano works
shortly before the composer's death. The recordings are in the national
archive. I'd love to heard restorations of these.

I've never heard of anyone trying this. I can't think of a reason why
Stockham's method can't be applied here.
