2624.2 | Call my machine | TROA02::CONNOLLY | | Tue Apr 30 1991 14:41 | 9 |
| That would be good but I'm pretty busy on Thursday May 02/91 .
Let's try to co-ordinate some other time to do it. Or even if you could
just post a short note re: pros, cons, etc., for the time being, and
then we could discuss in detail later.
Thanks for the response!

I think the DR550 had some of the best drum sounds on the
face of the earth. I also liked the portability. I sold
mine for a $30 loss after 6 months. I found it prohibitively
diffucult to edit patterns in the single line pattern edit
window. I found that it was overkill for guitar practice and
underkill for setting up a MIDI studio. I've since replaced
it with the "DR110 Graphic" which I got for the crippling
price of $30. It's a managable machine for my needs. I'm getting
better at programming because of it - I guess I needed "training
wheels".
There are a number of machines in the used market that may not
sounds as slick as the DR550 but have much better ease-of-use
features and MIDI implementations.
For myself - if I move back up into the mid-range drum machines,
I'll be doing it at used equipment prices and looking very hard
at features.

2624.4 | Volume controls? | NIMBUS::DAVIS | | Tue May 07 1991 09:47 | 6 |

Does anyone know if the DR550 has a facility to preset the individual
volume of the drums (not MIDI velocity)? I'm kinda looking for an
inexpensive box, with good sounds, that I can control with a sequencer.

| I don't know what you think of as inexpensive, but I still have a drum machine
on my "wish list" for eventual purchase; I was sort of eyeing the Yamaha QY10
for this purpose, since it can not only act as a drum machine, but also as a
portable sequencer and an SGU. I haven't yet seen the Kawai GB-2, but I mean to
get a look at one of those as well.

2624.6 | Go for it! | RTOEU::MLEWIS | | Wed May 08 1991 10:01 | 7 |
| Hi!
I have a DR 550, and think its brilliant! I would highly recommend it
for the price. Re .4, you can't set the volume individually, but you
can change the pitch, attack or decay for each drum sound (48 in all),
so you can make one sound seem louder than others.
Happy drumming....Martin

You can set individual volumes for the pads. It's not in the
menu of things you can change, it has a dedicated button on
the function pad. Volume can be varied from 0 to 15. Using
the accent follow you can vary from 0 to 22.
The applications demonstrated in the manual show how using a
0 volume voice at the same exclusion level as a crash can be
used as a crash mute. It also shows how to handle cymbal swells
and the subtle left right hand differences in snare rolls.
