2621.0. "MAC Modem Port Problem and MIDI SW" by SAINT::STCLAIR () Fri Apr 26 1991 11:42

I originally entered this problem and the fix into the MACINTOSH notes file
The Macintosh SE/30 Note 16.* contains these notes and other noters
suggestions. I am re-entering these two notes here because it seems my
MIDI software was at fault. I also thought that the MIDI Gurus in this notes
file might know and share a definitive answer.

----------- First notes entry

I have been having trouble with the MODEM port on my SE/30. The problem
started with my DOVE FAX Modem. The system seems to think that Apple Talk has
the MODEM port in use. Microphone II and my old modem same problem. But
chooser says No. Could this be a hardware problem? I have rebuilt the system
(6.0.5) and tried it with just the Dove system files installed. After
installing the new system the DOVE FAX would run on the PRINTER PORT.

----------- Second notes entry

-< Modem port is fixed by witchcraft. >-

The problem seems to have been associated with Apple MIDI Manager. Which had
been run previously from a separate system disk.

The fix was to reboot the system from the *MIDI* disk and shutdown Patch
Bay, reset the startup to MULTIFINDER and then reboot to the internal hard
disk. This seems to have fixed the problem.

I run Opcode's Vision which is copy protected and a real pain. So I created a
separate system disk on a removable hard drive with my MIDI software.
This disk was set up to start Patch Bay (a program that links MIDI programs
like a secquencer and librarian to one another and the MODEM and PRINTER
ports through Apple MIDI Manager) at startup time. It appears that even
though it was not run from my main hard disk it had left its mark somewhere
in the system.
