2512.0. "Yamaha AM802 portable mixer" by GSRC::COOPER (MIDI Rack Puke) Thu Dec 06 1990 16:26

I saw a Yamaha AM802 mixer today at a music store. The go for around
$450. Does anyone have one ? Can anyone tell me if this will be
affective with my little Roland R5 drum machine, guitar rig, and
    MT100 II 4 track ?

I've presently got a 16 channel Sound Tech thats a little noizy
for my tastes. It's also a LOT bigger than I need. I could easily
sell it to cover he cost of this little mixer.

What are the features that would be important to me with the above
    application ?

Here's a little info on the unit:

It's 8x2, three stereo FX loops, 2 band EQ. Here's what the
    glossy says:

    - Six mono mic/line and two stereo line inputs
    - All inputs employ standard 1/4" RTS (Ring-Tip-Sleeve)
jacks for standard effects unit and instrument input.
    - Channel 7 and 8 accept line level stereo from stereo output
musical instruments or stereo audio units such as CD players
      or tape decks.
    - High and Low freq. EQ shelving for all eight channels. +/- 15db
    - Three AUX controls on all input channels for use with external
effects processing units or monitor mixing.
    - Three AUX send jacks plus three AUX left/right return jacks all
with master controls for easy, triple stereo effects mixing.
    - Record-out control for adjusting the level of seperate line level
      stereo output.
    - Pan controls for each input channel
    - A phones control for independant adjustment of headphones monitoring
level, and seperate left/ right channel master faders.

    Some important (to me) specs:

    - Freq. response: 20-20Khz
    - Cross talk: -60db at 1khz
    - Weight: 5lbs 15ozs
    - Size: 14"x4"x12"

Is it new? I thought Yamaha made a KM802...

2512.2Nope, the Yamaha Pro Audio Catalog sez...GSRC::COOPERMIDI Rack PukeThu Dec 06 1990 17:347
I don't know if it's new or not. This one has been sitting in
Rice for 4 months... It's definately an AM802...there is also
    a less-cool AM602.

At anyrate, will it do for MIDI Rack Puke Basement Studios ??

    :)
2512.3You might check out the Yamaha MC802 ROBOT::RYENRick Ryen 240-6501 AET1-1/A6Thu Dec 06 1990 19:3233
I would personally be leary of the 2 band EQ. I own a Yamaha MC1202
(see description in note 12.623). It has a three band EQ, with
a quasi parametric MID band. That level of eq is not bad, but I have found
that using a system with three band, parametric on each band is even much
better. My point is that you might find two band limiting before too long.
I consider it very boarder-line.

The next thing I would question is the lack of XLR inputs. Do you want
to use microphones? If so, the lack of XRL inputs will be a pain, unless
you use the cheapest hi-impedence mics. My opinion is that anything without
XLR inputs is either a toy, or a keyboard mixer.

Sounds like it has plenty of effects. Stereo loop capability might be nice,
but I personally haven't found it to be too useful. Depends on how fancy
your outbound gear is.

How about meters. I prefer real VU meters. Meters of some type are an absolute
necessity for recording.

It sounds real compact. How important is that to you?

My guess is that it will work for you, but you might want to shop around a
bit to see what else is available in that price range. You can probably find
a used MC802 for about that price, and I think it has more useful features.
Peavy also makes some small mixers in that price range.

Just my opinion. I haven't seen or used the AM802. I'm just basing this
on the specs you listed.

Good hunting,
Rick

    Excellent feedback dude !

    Like, Thanks !

Tell me, will my little impedance matching transformers and junk like
that work for the mics ? I use SM58's and EV PL88's and I have a
whole slew of adapters and funny cords. I also has two outboard
EQ's (parametric and graphic) that I'd use with the mixer, plus the
5 band stereo EQ on the MT100 II.

The thing that caught my eye on this mixer is that it's small, matches
my MT100 II 4 track, and the dealer said he'd trade me even-steven for
my gigging board (the St112 in 12.close_to_last)...Else he wants $450
    for the AM802.

BTW - It's advertised as being a keyboard mixer "Also GREAT for home
recording" which is what I'm after.

jc (Someday I wanna trade my SM58 for a Sennheuser ;)
2512.5Okay, maybe it's right for youROBOT::RYENRick Ryen 240-6501 AET1-1/A6Fri Dec 07 1990 12:2220
Yeah, sure you adapters will work. I myself have 6 of them! If you already
have some that will help. But, if you had to buy them, at ~$12 a pop
(the radio shack variety (least $)), then it starts to add cost to the mixer.
The thing that used to bother me was this 4 inch cable transformer connector,
hanging out of a 1/4" connection. I always worried that I'd trip over
a cable, and break my recorder(plastic X15). It might be livable if you
only hook up one or two at at time, and are careful.
Direct XLR is better both mechanically and electrically.

I looked back at 12.697 (the board you are selling). I think you are trading
away some useful features for portability. If you swap it, you are taking
a $ beating. On the other hand, mixing boards aren't moving well right now.
I have had almost no interest in my MC1202.

I probably wouldn't make the trade myself, unless I was able to end up with
a few bucks in my pocket as a result of the transaction. But, then nobody
knows better than you what your needs/wants are.

Whatever you end up doin, hope it works out.

    Thanks Rick.

I was thinking I might have to make the guy throw in an anvil-type
case for the mixer or something to make it seem like a better deal
for me... I'm probably going to talk to him tomorrow and will
let you know what happens on Monday !

    Asta,
