| A device I'm looking into, that's designed specifically for
hammond organ simulation, is the Yamaha CVS-10 module. It's a tiny
box (about 4"x2"x8") that was originally made for adding to Yamaha's
Electone organs and Clavinova pianos. Its list of features is smaller
than the Voce, but I'm gonna check out its sound anyways:
3-way multitimbral via MIDI
9 drawbar pitches plus several (3?) percussive pitches
Leslie simulation
Vibrato
Digital reverb
Stereo outs
LCD display (2x16 char)
24 presets, plus 24 user-programmable locations
I'll post any further info here. Oh, the price ... list is $995

Well, I've checked out the unit. It sounds NICE! Having some digital
reverb built-in helped it sound decent w/o outboard stuff. The leslie
simulation seems quite good to me, including the "slow-down/speed-up"
effect that you'd expect. Slow Leslie is nice, and the other built-in
effect, Chorus, adds alot to the (classical) pipe-organ-type patches.
There wan't a full Owner's Manual with the device (I'm still waiting to
see/read this), so some of my MIDI questions went unanswered. It has
2 MIDI INs and 2 MIDI OUTs. It has, in addition to 2 RCA-jack outputs,
2 RCA jack AUX INPUTs, which might make it possible to "daisy-chain"
the audio from another device through this one.
One thing in particular that I was surprised by is that the drawbar
sounds have plenty of low-end "punch", which some sampled B-3 patches
I'd heard lacked.
I'm still not sure if I want to plunk down the ~$800 for one of
these...

| Since a couple of people have asked ... here in the "Metro Boston area"
this device can be seen/tried at Boston Piano 'n' Organ. The Reading,
Mass. store is at 617-944-4222. I think I spoke with Arthur Duran or
something like that.
This device was intended as an add-on for Yamaha's home organ line ...
I'd originally read about it in a NAMM show review - not many places I
called had heard of it! Although it was maybe intended for home use,
it seems IMHO to be of excellent ("pro-gear") quality.
A couple of advantages over the VOCE, again IMHO:
-Built in digital reverb w/adjustable decay
-2x16 character LCD (can't remember if it was backlit though)
-More buttons, i.e. better "user interface"
-2 MIDI ins
Tiny box, you could set it on top of a keyboard!

| I decided to buy one. So far, really enjoy using it! A few things
that I learned, or that differ slightly from the above ...
It has two "timbres", either drawbar or principal, Presumably to
simulate the Hammond sound, and classical pipe-organ sounds,
respectively. You can program up to 64 "registrations" which are a
combination of
voice for "upper manual"
voice for "lower manual"
voice for "pedal manual" (monophonic)
tremolo ("leslie") speed
digital reverb depth
tremolo "on" or "off"
probably a few other things
It responds to MIDI Program Change commands 1-16
The display is backlit, but has no contrast adjustment
The 2 MIDI Ins *do* merge!

| Jim,
Are you able to reproduce some "killer B3" sounds on the CVS-10??
Beeing in search of Hammond simulation, I have tried the VOCE SGU but
were not really satisfied.
Question, does the CVS-10 respond to MIDI continous Controller messages
simulating drawbar movement??
I have tried to locate a CVS-10 in the Stockholm area, to get a hands
(ears) on session but haven't so far been able to trace one. That's why
I am interested in your opinion on the sound.

2505.6 | $800 | NIOMAX::LAING | Soft-Core Cuddler*Jim Laing*229-7808 | Fri Feb 15 1991 17:22 | 14 |
| Re .last few
It set me back $800, including a monsterous power supply (about the
size of 3 "wall bugs", it uses a 3-conductor cable and supplies
2 different voltages).
Re .5 - from another note, I see that you already bought one! Yes, it
can create "killer B3" sounds, but w/o the "distortion" effect.
According to the MIDI impl. chart, it does NOT support control over
individual "drawbars".
How do you like yours, .5?
