2481.0. "IBM PC/AT w cakewalk -- what hardware?" by WR1FOR::ENDTERBI () Thu Nov 01 1990 12:24

I have a friend who is interested in adding MIDI to his IBM PC(AT).
After reading a lot of notes in this conference, I have some questions.
If he were to choose to run the cakewalk sequencing software, what type
of interface card does he need? Does the card have to be MPU-401
compatible? Are there any cards other than Roland and Voyetra(sp?)
    which will work with cakewalk?

By the way, my friend is a complete novice when it comes to music.

       Thanks,

My cakewalk manual is at home, but I think it wants only MPU401 compatible.
Another compatible besides Voyetra is MusicQuest (which is what I have). They
have at least 3 models. The cheapest is about $99 and has 1 in, 1 out,
metronome, and not much else. The other two levels reach up into a few more
hundreds of $s and add SMTPE follow, multiple channels, etc. I've always
heard good things about these cards and their support. A number of people
say that these work much more reliably with faster CPUs than some unnamed
others.

The only caveat, and I'm not sure it is legitimate: The Voyetra card actually
uses a Roland rom, and thus is more certain to be compatible. (The V software
complains that the MQ does not have the real rom, but it works ok. Probably
a marketing gimmick to sell their cards :-( )

I'd be willing to bet this string would fit real nice in one of the
    above notes.
