Here's a new topic for Personal Composer, a Notation & Sequencer software for IBM-PC and compatibles. I just obtained one and thus a couple of questions: How do you insert Program change commands into the Event editor? Do they get translated into notation? Is it possible to modify an recorded event AND retain its duration/velocity etc..? (Would like to modify the start time or pitch.) Is it possible to record a, say, 2 bar drum pattern and get it copied along automatically while you record other parts? I quess that's enough for now. -Pasi-

Has anyone else encountered Personal Composer? If so, how is it? What does it cost? Mark

Haven't used this one, but Twelve Tone Systems is going to release their notation package in "early 1991". List price will be $99. Combined with Cakewalk at $150 (list), you've pretty much got everything covered...I think.
2429.3 | I have Personal Composer | VFOFS::GUNDELFINGER | Fri Jan 10 1992 15:39 | 23
I purchased Personal Composer v3.3 about a year ago for about $400 (sorry I'm just now getting a reply to you). I previously used Roland's MIDI+ on my Apple ][e with an MPU401 and was happy with multi-track recording until I wanted something to put my music to score. After searching every music store in the Washington DC area, I found nobody had a scoring program for Apple ][e/MPU401. One sly music store salesman sold me Leadsheeter by Passport Design claiming it would work on my MPU401, but the most it did for me was to destroy everything I had on my music disk. It seemed the only way for me to "score" was to buy an IBM PC type system (something repulsive to me as a loyal DEC employee). Finally I swallowed my pride and bought a PC clone and an MPU401 for it. I looked at the various scoring software at the music stores, and Personal Composer seemed to have what I wanted. Over the past year, I have not had much free time to use/play with PC33 (Personal Composer V3.3) but it does have a lot of features and the capability to program in custom functionality. However, I have found the documentation to be sketchy in some areas and some of the utilities are tough to use, such as controlling where to break into pages on the printer. These difficulties I'm sure will be overcome with time and practice, practice, practice (the same holds true in mastering any musical instrument). Peter Gundelfinger |
