2422.0. "Looking for a cheap keyboard" by FERNEY::LAROCHE (Souviens-toi du VAX de Soissons) Fri Aug 17 1990 11:58

Hi there,

I am new to the MIDI things and need some advice. I am learning harmony and
counterpoint and try to do some exercices like harmonize melodies. I would
like to hear what I writte, and it is not always easy at the piano (i am
not a first level performer). My goal is to eventually be able to harmonize
songs for a chor.
I have an ATARI 520 ST and I know it is possible to connect a MIDI keyboard to
it. I don't need a very powerfull system with drums, effects, ... I just want
something that produces "correct" sounds and that is not very expensive.
I guess I need also a software to pilot the MIDI interface. Of course, it
would be find if this software can produce scores !

Have you any idea about :

	- such a keyboard.

	- such a software.

	- what will be the cost ?

Thanks in advance,

Pierre.

COMMUSIC has a "GETTING_STARTED" keyword which may likely answer
    all your questions.

Notes> DIR/KEY=GETTING_STARTED will give you a listing of all the
    relevant notes...

2422.2maybe a casio?HIBOB::SIMMONSTristram Shandy as an equestrianFri Aug 17 1990 12:109
Casio gives you a lot for your money. I am satisfied with my CT-670
costing about $350. It has many limitations but it does have plausible
voices and MIDI. The lack of keyboard dynamics (velocity) doesn't
bother me since I have been messing about on harpsichord for years.

By the way, the CT-670 has full size keys and 5 octaves and a note
compass. I would not settle for less.

Compass is the only term I know for the frequency range of a musical
instrument - ain't any other ever.

Ah. I think the way I think is in terms of the number of keys a
keyboard has (like 49, 77, 88 ...) or by the number of octaves. This
often has nothing to do with the actual range of the instrument.
For example, some keyboards can respond to a, what, 128? note range
over MIDI. And, some vary, like samplers which may vary according to
the pitch bend range you select for it. Splits add more confusion.
    Oh, well ... :)

    Hi Pierre,

According to your node, it seems that you work in Ferney so, if you
contact me, I can tell you where you can choice a keybord in a shop in
the "Pays de Gex". I can also help you to get a discount of 20% on new
    condition material for music.

If you want more advanced demonstration, I can show you an ATARI 1040
running PRO 24 III, CUBASE (and soon CUBASE V2.0 with MROS), SYNTHWORK ....
This may help in your choice.
