-< Alchimie Jr. shareware MIDI sequencer >-
Does someone know about or actually use shareware ($25) MIDI
sequencer "Alchemie Jr." developed by a fellow in Swiss?
thanks, Tak
Hi Tak,
I have a copy of version 2.22 of this sequencer, but have never
actually used it, being a Steinberg PRO24III user.
From what I have read in the documentation, it appears to be multi-
tasking and extremely comprehensive, and is for Atari 1040 monochrome only.
I downloaded it from a bulletin board in England on which extremely favourable
comments are made in one of the music conferences.
There is a lengthy and comprehensive manual on disk, which I have not
really read in any great detail.
If you would like specific details let me know, or if you would like
a copy let me know where you are and perhaps I can send it via. internal mail.
Very Best Regards,
Brian

| Hi Brian,
Thanks for your reply. I believe Alchimie Jr. is a shareware, right?
If so, I would like you to upload it somewhere I can download from.
I've been also a PRO24III user for half a year. I have some complaints
to it ... it cannot play back multiple sequences, it sometime miss MIDI inputs,
it sometimes even hangs up ... etc. Yes, I was thinking of getting Cubase.
Hopefully with M-ROS, expecting all these problems should have been solved.
But if the Alchimie Jr. is available as a shareware, I would like to try it
before to decide to pay for much costly Cubase.
thanks in advance, Tak

Yes, Alchimie is shareware, so free distribution is possible, and is in fact
encouraged. Unfortunately I do not possess the facilities at present to upload
this via. the network, but I shall take this opportunity to find out how this
could possibly be done. In the meantime, if anyone is within practical mailing
distance of Edinburgh, I would be pleased to forward a copy. Maybe REPLY/AUTHOR
would be the best way of contact re. this; or I could of course supply the
telephone number of the Bulletin Board in England from which it was downloaded
(don't know if its O.K. to do that here?) I should imagine Alchemie should be
freely available on Stateside Atari BBSs in the MIDI sections.
Perhaps best not to continue discussion on PRO24III here as there is a
separate notes-file on this, but I have never had any "hanging" or crashing
problems. Have you tried cleaning the dongle-cartridge contact fingers with
contact cleaner - I believe this sometimes causes problems.
I'll read Alchemie documentation in more detail and post a brief summary
here for anyone who may be interested.
Very Best Regards
Brian

| Due to overwelming demand,
The LHARCed file ALCHIMIE.LZH can be found on KAON::
Some ascii documentation extracted from alchimie.lzh, ALCHIMIE.DOC can
also be found on KAON::
For those of you who don't have lharc.prg, the file LHARC051.TOS
(also on KAON::) may help you. This is a 'self decompressing' file
and when run will create many files, one of which is lharc.prg. However
I have never uploaded a TOS file onto VMS using kermit before, so
I can't guarentee it will work.
I hope it all works, I'm not to good with kermit, so yell if there's
any problems.

| There are details on Alchimie in topic number 912 in the Atari
notes conference (26054::ATARIST) for anyone who is interested, with
details on where it can be found on KAON.
In the meantime, I have uploaded it too, on
NIBLIK::FSUSER$DISK:[ROBSON.HOBBY.ST]ALCHIMIE.LZH;2
This is my first attempt at uploading and I would appreciate very much
some feedback on the succesr otherwise of downloading, as I would
like to upload some more MIDI shareware/P.D. stuff. I got help on how
to upload from Jeffrey Lomick - Thanks very much Jeffrey.

2378.6 | Forget KAON:: at the moment | HAMPS::POORE | Stuart Poore, IM, STG, @BST, U.K. | Mon Jul 09 1990 08:57 | 14 |
| It would appear that my 'uploading' skills need more work I'm afraid.
Knowing my luck I probably set file type binary at only one end.
Therefore the .TOS file doesn't work and nor does the .LZH file.
The .DOC file is readable (e.g. via TPU), but when typed appears
to have no line feeds in it.
I will try again.
Does anybody have a version of LHARC on the VAX that they know works ?
Sorry for the inconvenience.

-< New Version with Full Wild card support >-
Well, after changing/adding a heck of alot of code. I
managed to get full will card support for LHARC/VMS and the
source code is still compatable with U**X systems, I am also
running it under ULTRIX with no problems. I'll make the
source available when it's cleaned up.
New image in CGOU01::AMNEW:LHARC.EXE
o Additions to version 1.01.
- File names are displayed in VMS format.
- Full wild card support for adding/extracting/deleting and so on.
Has even better control than zoo. As you can extract files from
certain subdirectories or all subdirectories or just top level.
You can use VMS or unix wildcarding.
example:
$ LHARC x FF347.LZH [*...]README
The above command would get all readme files from the top level
and all subdirectories of the archive file FF347.LZH, and creates
subdirectories to place them in. Use 'LHARC xi' to place them
all in your current directory or 'LHARC xc' to confirm each file.
$ LHARC X FF347.LZH README
Just gets the README file from the top level directory.
- VMS modified/creation date stamp support. When extracting a
file from an archive onto a VMS machine the creation date and
revised date is set to date/time from the archive. (Like its
suppose to.) This does not work in Zoo for vms.
- New option 'c' can be applied to any command, and will cause
LHARC to ask confirmation on any add/extract/delete for each
file.
- bug fixes... and probably other things I've forgotten already.
I'll try and get a doc file/man page typed up time permitting.
Please give it a try and all comments/suggestions welcome.
/Steve.

-< More info on use of LHARC >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This image was linked against a VMS 5.3 system. If you run it on a VMS
system running less than 5.3 you will get a shareable library mismatch
error. To solve this I have relinked the image including the RTL which
makes the image 3 times bigger, but allows it to run on any version
of VMS. I called this image CGOu01::AMNEW:LHARC_WITH_RTL.EXE. So if
you are running less than 5.3 copy this image, and rename it to
LHARC.EXE.
Also heres some more hints on LHARC.
LHARC d (delete command)
--------------------------
One of the good uses of lharc is to be able to delete and repack the
archive removing the files that you don't wont. For example if your
interested in fish disk FF346, but only in a few of the programs on
that disk. To save download time you could remove this from the archive
via:
LHARC d FF347 [.Packetsupport] [.wbd] [.Patchntsc] [*...]*.c [*...]*.h
This would delete the 3 directoires and their contents and also all C
source files and .h files from every directory.
Alternately you could provide the 'c' option to the delete command and
be prompted for each file that you wish to delete:
LHARC dc FF347 *
When deleting from Archive LHARC saves a copy of the archive before
any changes were made in a file called FF347.BAK, therefore you can
recover anything deleted on the last command.
You will notice that for big archives the delete command takes a while
to complete as it repacks the archive. ZOO does this differently: it
does not remove the file from the archive until you manually repack
it with the ZOO P command. So it is best to do all deletes on the same
command line rather than running 'LHARC d' multiple times.
LHARC f (freshen command)
---------------------------
The freshen command is the same as the ADD command except that it only
adds the file to the archive if it already exists in the archive and
the version you are adding is newer that the one in the archive.
Example:
$ LHARC x FF347 [.FME]*
$ Set def [.FME] ! since 'i' option not specified a new dir was created
$ Edit fme.asm ! change the source file
$ Set def [-] ! backup where we were
$ LHARC f FF347 [.FME]*.* ! note VMS wildcarding needs the dot.
[.FME]FMS.ASM - Added
$
LHARC u (update command)
------------------------
This is the same as the Add command but if the file is already in the
archive and not older than the disk version then dont add it.

2378.8 | Try again on KAON:: (at your own risk) | HAMPS::POORE | Stuart Poore, IM, STG, @BST, U.K. | Wed Jul 11 1990 06:40 | 17 |
| I have tried again :-
Try KAON::LHARC051.TOS (new version)
KAON::ALCIMIE.LZH (new version)
KAON::ALCIMIE.DOC (same version)
Please note, no guarentees ! If you sepnd a fortune on the phone bill &
it doesn't work, please don't blaim me (I've spent a small fortune
uploading them thank you !).
For this reason I would be gratefull if people could respond with
wiether it has worked or not with these files or the file on NIBLIK. I
could then copy the working versions to the MIDI library on
MIDI::MIDI$DUA1:[MIDILIB...]
Many Thanks,
Stuart P.

2378.10 | It worked, thanks! | JRDV06::HANADA | Takeshi Hanada, Storage System Development/JRD/Tokyo | Thu Jul 12 1990 03:25 | 21 |
| Thanks a lot, Stuart.
I have downloaded KAON::ALCHIMIE.LZH and defrosted it on PC (just for my
convenience) then ran it on my Atari. It started up fine! After instantly
played two DEMOs in the .lZH file, I have tried and succeeded to import a MIDI
file which was exported from Steinberg PRO24III. The song was eight tracked
fusion style music w/ about 10,000 notes. It replayed my music perfectly!
One thing I noticed at that time was that Alchimie seemed not able to live with
ETERNAL2, which is a reset proof RAM disk program. Before I removed it, when I
imported said MIDI file w/ 10,000 notes, the screen display was corrupted and
it lost control. It reproduced when I retired. It seemed that RAM allocation
was duplicated between Alchimie and ETERNAL2 or something like that. One
another non-reproduceable trouble was a sudden hang-up when I click system info
icon to see available memory size. Another program I install at system boot is
mouse doubler. I have not yet tested to identify mouse doubler is the cause or
not.
I'll be back here with more comments some time next week.

Just a word of warning here....Alchimie Jr. looks like a nice
sequencer, but it won't run on unexpanded 520STs. I can't record
anything because as soon as I go to copy the input buffer to a track, I
get an insufficient memory warning. Time for that RAM upgrade....8^)

2378.12 | Actually A Surprisingly Good Package | AQUA::ROST | Dickie Peterson Wannabe | Wed Jan 02 1991 17:10 | 36 |
| I've finally gotten a chance to spend some time with Alchimie.
For free, it's a dynamite sequencer. It has some impressive goodies:
MIDI event lists, graphic editing (piano roll), supports MIDI files
(both type 0 and type 1), can be used as either a pattern based or
linear sequencer, etc. It's mouse driven, and once you understand the
basic logic of its operation (not trivial) work goes pretty quickly.
The documentation blows, its minimal and poorly translated (typical for
PD software). There are no out and out bugs I've come across, but
there are some things invloving the auto record mode that messed me up
for awhile, so I stopped trying to use it.
One thing I didn't like about it: It doesn't appear to record tempo
either with patterns or songs, this means that shifting tempi during a
sequence is impossible. It also means you have to remember what tempo
you wanted when you play a song back. Ugh!
The other thing I disliked is that all editing is destructive. I'm used
to Ensoniq sequencers, which have non-destructive editing. To get
around this, you have to make copies of your patterns, so if the edit
is unsuccessful, you can try it again.
I've been experimenting using it in conjunction with my SQ-80's
sequencer. Alchimie is not as easy to use but has tremendous editing
power. I have been exporting tracks from the SQ-80 to Alchimie,
tweaking things, then copying them back. This seems to give me the best
of both worlds.
For anyone with a 1-meg (or more) ST, I'd recommend this as a first
sequencer package simply because it rivals products in the $300 range,
and blows away the usual entry-level packages like Dr. T's MRS, Sonus
SST or Hybrid Arts MidiTracks.

2378.13 | double-click?! | COL01::OBERHOLZ | Bert Oberholz, EIS Stuttgart, GY, DTN 765-5195 | Thu Sep 12 1991 09:20 | 69 |
| Hi,
has anybody tried to 'double-click' on ALCHIMIE-objects?
The documentation says:
Dclick : Point something and click brievly two times on the left
button.
:
:
:
If you double-click on the PLAY button Alchimie Jr shows you the
current sequencing mode in a dialog box. Modes are :
:
:
:
If you double-click on the Input Buffer bar, you will see a dialog
box displaying his contents and the current record mode.
:
:
:
Double-click on an empty line of the song window, fill the dialog box
and confirm.
:
:
:
Double-click on the song you want to modify.
:
:
:
Double-click on a pattern and fill the dialog box.
:
:
:
Double-click and change in the dialog box.
:
:
:
An other way to modify those parameters is to double-click on a track
and modify them in the info dialog box.
:
:
:
Double-click on the left side of the note. To change a parameter
value input it or select the title of the param you want to modify
and use the arrows to increment/decrement the value.
:
:
:
Note : You also may edit an event by double-clicking on the event you
want in the window.
:
:
:
Double-click on the event you want to change, modify the parameters
in the dialog box and confirm.
:
:
:
To display the data filter dialog box, select the title Filter in the
menu Config or double-click on the FILTER icon.
But it doesn't work with my installation. My other software accepts
my double-clicks, why not ALCHIMIE?
regards
Bert.
