I picked up an ATI EGA Wonder Graphics card for my IBM PC a few weeks ago. In reading the installation instructions, I found a paragraph that said this card (and it sounds like any EGA card) can't be used with another card that uses IRQ2. This happens the be the same interrupt that the Roland MPU-401 uses. Am I doomed to CGA forever or is this not a concern? I can't change the interrupts, because I don't have any left. Any ideas from someone a little more PC literate than me would be appreciated. Geoff

I seem to remember from my PC hacker days that the 401 used the prototype card interrupt. I cant remember the number but it seems strange that a video card would use this one. The numbers 7 or 9 seem to come to mind (it was on the SECOND interrupt controller chip on the AT). Have you tried it? Ken

This computer is an XT not an AT. The MPU-401 uses interrupt 2 (IRQ 2), as does this (and most other EGA cards, I think). That's what I think is the problem. Geoff

Geoff, like someone suggested two replies before this one, you should use IRQ 7, if possible. This interrupt is generally assigned to LPT1, but most software does not enable the interrupt; program I/O is commonly used to drive this port. This pearl of wisdom gleaned from the Cakewalk installation directions. John Stewart

Geoff, Relax! I've been running an MPU-401 in my IBM/AT compatible with EGA for about a year with no worries! Paul |
