2333.4 | dyo780 ain't no more | DYPSS1::SCHAFER | I used to wear a big man's hat... | Fri Oct 05 1990 11:07 | 17 |
| I think I posted a note in 17.last that said MIDIlib has moved to node
MIDI. You may want to look there for more info.
For those who care ...
DYO780 is now in DIAL (wanna buy it?). It was a very old 11/780 that
was eating the local office out of house and home with maintenance
costs. They opted to replace it with a VAX 3800.
I started with Digital in Dayton; however, I haven't worked out of that
office for at least 5 years. They let me keep an account lying around
on DYO780 just because I'm such a nice guy. 8-) But I wasn't nice
enough to warrant an account on the new machine.
In short, node name DYO780 is no longer a valid node name.

2333.5 | MIDILIB Format?? | STKAI2::HALL | | Wed Jan 09 1991 08:55 | 12 |
| I have some MIDI files that I want to upload to MIDILIB.
What is the preferred format to deliver??
ARC:ed, Binary ...?? File extension ( .MID, .SMF, .ARC ...)??
I produce the files on my 1040 as standard MIDI files, upload them
to my VAX with XMODEM and then copy.
Would be nice if we could agree on one format for the lib.

2333.6 | my opinion... | MIDI::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUIP Engineering | Wed Jan 09 1991 14:17 | 10 |
| I would prefer Standard Midi File format with an extension of .SMF, *without*
any form of compression, since people have all different kinds of computers
and there are lots of different types of compression programs for each.
If people want compressed files, they can compress them for themselves.
-Dan (MIDILIBrarian)
PS. I assume that these are non-copyrighted pieces of music you're uploading,
yes? No copyrighted material allowed...

2333.7 | Files to come | STKAI2::HALL | | Thu Jan 10 1991 03:20 | 15 |
| Dan,
Thanks for the info.
Most of the material I have is down loaded from various BBS's and thus
no copyrights applies. Others are known songs arranged and sequenced
by myself.
BTW, I downline loaded the B3PLUS piece, but when my sequencer tried to
read the .MID file, it failed. Can you confirm how many bytes the
original file is, mine was about 17kB when loaded into the ATARI. It
seems that it should have been larger, the VAX file is 134 blocks.

| I was also unable to read B3PLUS on an IBM. I even tried converting it to
fixed length blocks, but to no avail.
Any hints? How did you upload it? With PCSA?

2333.9 | I've re-checked. It should work. | MALLET::BARKER | Pretty Damn Cosmic | Tue Jan 15 1991 07:01 | 20 |
| Re last couple with problems accessing the Bach piece.
I've checked by downloading this again and re-loading it into my
sequencer and everything works OK. I used Kermit to push it up and down from
the VAX.
Is it a problem copying from MIDILIB or in loading it into a squencer?
I suppose that there is a slight shadow hanging over my sequencer and
SMF as I've been unable to read in the Beethoven piece in MIDILIB. Perhaps what
I think is SMF isn't. Could someone who has succesfully loaded this please post
a note to let us know.
The file is much bigger than the 17K seen on the Atari by one noter. As
it is 134K blocks on the VAX it should be about 67Kb of data.
Nigel
P.S. With Kermit the magic invocation is usually SET FILE TYPE BINARY whenever
there are problems copying files

2333.10 | no prob here either | MIDI::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUIP Engineering | Tue Jan 15 1991 15:51 | 5 |
| I too had no problem downloading. It was to my Atari using Whack/Stransf
and took only a couple minutes.

| RE .-2
I also expected the file to be 134 Blocks/2 ~ 67 Kb on the ATARI.
I have it as 134 Blocks in my account, I use XMODEM for transferring.
I've used XMODEM/FLASH successfully for all files so far (also for the
B9*.SMF). I'll try to UUENCODE it, transfer and UUDECODE. I'll post the
result soon.

2333.13 | I've got it | STKAI2::HALL | | Thu Jan 17 1991 02:50 | 11 |
| I have loaded the B3PLUS.MID into my sequencer successfully.
I think the problems I had were in the XMODEM transfer. I UUEncoded the
file, transferred, UUDecoded and no problems to import the file into
PRO24.
Due to other technical problems I have not have a chance to play it
yet.
