2304.0. "TX81Z upgrade, where cheapest?" by MAMIE::KMCQUADE () Thu Mar 29 1990 13:53

    	I recently picked up a TX81Z which needs a ROM change. I know
    I can get the upgrade free if I take it to an authorized dealer/service
    center. The question is: where do I find the cheapest installation
    charge in the greater Boston/Southern N.H. area?

    Kevin

    P.S. The latest Rev. is 1.6 and they would have whacked me $88.00
          plus shipping and handling if they shipped to me.

2304.2 Just brings it up to snuff! MAMIE::KMCQUADEThu Mar 29 1990 18:0013

    It's a firmware upgrade for bugs that were uncovered along the way.
    If you hold the Cursor Left Arrow and Cursor buttons and power the
    TZ's up, the display will show you what Rev. the ROM (PROM) is.
    The current Rev. is 1.6, so depending on how old the TZ is, it could
    go back to Rev. 1.0 (I think). There's a discussion in one of the
    older TZ notes about earlier bugs and Rev. changes. I posted this
    new, hoping to get an immediate response, not knowing who might
    check the older note or when. In all honesty, I'm not sure what
    the bug fixes are but they've certainly been discovered.

2304.3but maybe I'll find it soon (good argument)LEDDEV::ROSSshiver me timbres....Wed Apr 11 1990 15:2635

    Im not sure why I know this, but....
    (well, *I* am, but you're not)

    Rom versions 1.0 to 1.5 were shipped from Yamaha.

    Version 1.6 fixes some obscure bug (read: no one seems to
    know, and Yama isnt telling, and have *YOU* found it?)
    Version 1.6 was never shipped INSTALLED in a unit. It is
    availible to fix that elusive problem with 1.5....um,
    what did you say that was again?

    It seems that Yamaha is taking "well, if you havent
    run across the problem, and cant tell us what it is...
    why do you NEED the update?"

    I think that's the rationale around trying to support
    their local service organization, and have those folks
    upgrade your 81z, not you. (Ie, you get charged lots to try
    it yourself...). If it works, dont fix it...that thing, ya know?

    NOW: ALMOST ALL 81z's have the rom chip in a socket, so
    upgrade means taking off the top and swapping chips..with one
    exception: A FRACTION (not all) of Version 1.5 Roms are soldered in.
    Ok, now THEN I could see charging for some time to change it...

    But the odds are with you...but what are you trying to fix?
    Your fellow 81z enthusiasts would like to know!

2304.4 No known bug reports here! WOODRO::KMCQUADEWed Apr 11 1990 16:4120
    Fellow 81z enthusiasts, it is not that I uncovered the phantom bug, I
    was just aware from note 761.* that there was a ROM upgrade for the
    unit. My ROM was a couple of Revs back and when I called Y they told
    me the latest was 1.6 and then gave me a list of no longer existant
    service locations where I could have the installation done.

    I was hoping someone might have gone thru this recently and could point
    me to a place where I wouldn't have to pay a hefty charge to have them
    take out 7 screws, pop the top, remove a socketed PROM and put in a new
    one.

    Sorry if I left the impression that there was a bug and I knew what it
    was and was not relaying that info. If that were the case I would
    certainly have announced that fact.

    In this case, I guess I will get a defacto Rev. 1.6 upgrade just
    because I knew, thanks to this notes file, that there had been a number
    of ROM upgrades along the way.

2304.5Any Update ?HAMPS::POOREStuart Poore, IM, STG, @BST, U.K.Tue Sep 11 1990 11:068
    Does anybody have an update on this ?

    I just bought a S/H TX81Z and it gave version 1.3 .

    Is it worth the aggro of trying to get 1.4 , 1.5 or 1.6 ?? Is there
    anything major wrong with 1.3 ?

2304.6Save your effort...DCSVAX::COTETo play, turn bottom up...Tue Sep 11 1990 17:277
    I've got a V1.3 and a 1.6. I've found no difference between them, the
    possibility of a soldered ROM (vs. socketed) in the earlier version
    being the only exception.

    I'd put no time or effort into seeking an upgrade to the ROM.
