Yes I use Steinberg Software exclusively for this very reason.
I am assuming that you mean Sattelite which allows you to modfify
patches and load the subsuequent sysex into your sequences.
It works well, I have never used any other patch editors.
No complaints so far !
Paul.

How are the sounds coming with SYNTHWORKS and is the interface user-

Re -1
Yes synthworks is pretty user friendly although from program to program
there do tend to be changes in implementation, depending on the age and
level of sophistication of the programs. I have synthworks programs for
D50, DX/TX and have had in the past Fb01. They all worked I use them
actively and am happy with them. I am just about to take delivery of
the latest versions as part of the pre-paid upgrade schemes. Currently
I only have a 1 neg 1040 which I may upgrade to a Stacy when they have
setlled down in terms of delivery and development. This will enable me
to load all the Steinberg programs together and away we go !
In theory you can use sattelite without synthworks if you can get
somebody to send you some synthworks files on disk. The editing is
fairly low level e.g. Fatter brighter etc...
Paul.

Paul,
Still got your TX802? Steinberg/Jones has just come out with v3.01
for DX/TX Synthworks (I got a copy of the update letter and order
form from Chad - I didn't get one though I should have). We'll be
ordering our upgrades pretty soon (DX/TX for me, D-50 for him).
The full list of upgrades is as follows:
Avalon v1.1 $15
Synthworks DX/TX v3.01 $15
Synthworks K1 v1.51 $15
Synthworks M1 v1.55 $15
Synthworks D-50/D-550 v1.52 $15
Synthworks D-10/-110/-20/-5/MT-32 v1.51 $15
Synthworks Proteus v1.01 free
Note: all software is for Atari ST series computers.

Same note at the same time.
I obviously got a similar circular in the U.K. at the same time.
Interesting difference all the updates in the U.K. are free, given you
pay for postage and the disks. (which you send to them !)
Makes a change for things to be cheaper in the U.K.

it work.
Anyone like to try again ?

complain too much :-)

Paul,
I must confess, I really haven't done much with SYNTHWORKS (yet) other
than organizing files, so all I have for data files is the Steinberg
library and all the patches/banks found in DYO780::[MIDILIB]. If
you just want to check if we *can* transfer SYNTHWORKS files, then
sure we can still go for it.

re last few
Just so happens that when I got home last night that my self addressed
envelope was waiting for me with the two disks inside. Not bad seeing
as I only sent them off last Saturday (lunchtime).
I will post up 2 banks tonight one for d50 and one for DX, Lets see how
we go. I am always interested in hearing other peoples patches as they
give you ideas for the things that can be done, that you hadn't
previously thought about. If you see what I mean ?
The 2 new progs have some obvious changes and have been significantly
upgraded. I am not sure, given that the real purchase is the dongle,
whether it is legal for me to post the programs as well. Given that the
upgrade charge is supposedly to cover admin postage etc...
This could save you the wait and the money.
Paul.

Well, thanks for the offer PK, but I'd like to stay within the law.
My guess is that Russ Jones wants his cut of the pie :^). Like Chad,
I got Synthworks for a fairly discounted price (I think it was $150
reduced from $250) so paying out the $15 for an upgrade doesn't
bother me so much.
I would very much like to hear some of your patches for the DX/TX.
Like I said, though, in one of my previous, I've been using Synthworks
only as a patch librarian up to now and for doing some minor 'fooling
around' so I haven't got any to share with you. Also, some friends of
mine are borrowing my TX802 and I don't know when they'll be finished
with it.

I wasn't for one minute suggesting that we "break the law" I believe
that Steinberg take the view that it is "ok" to transfer the programs
because they are no use without the dongle anyway. Thus the free price
in the U.K. So the files as it were are in the public domain it's the
dongle thats protected. Interesting ?
In terms of TX DX stuff I could load up my 2 libraries and you can see
if you can load them. Hows that ?
Paul.

Yo Chad, you said you were gonna call Steinberg/Jones today right?
Why not ask them why we have to pay $15 for upgrades when those
in the UK get them for free? Maybe we *can* copy the software.
See what they have to say.
PK, if you could upload the data files to
MIDI::MIDI$DUA0:[DAN.MIDI.DEPOSIT], I'll see what I can do with them.
Thanks,
Dan

| Well, good news!
I just got off the phone with the guy at Russ Jones Marketing, who is the
distributor for Steinberg stuff in US.
He said that indeed yes I could get my upgrade copies from someone else as
the licensing was the hardware key more or less. He said the fees he charges
are for the disks, copying fees, his time, handling, etc. He said that that
would be fine.

2288.21 | didn't work :-( | MIDI::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Thu Mar 22 1990 16:13 | 15 |
| PK,
I just finished downloading DXTX.ARC and then de-arced it and,
alas, it didn't work. I got a nice string of bombs after it had
loaded most of the way. Any idea why it didn't work? I've got a
monochrome Mega ST2, had the hardware key in place (verified that
this was OK by loading v2.0) and I even copied what seemed like
necessary files from my 2.0 disk (DX.RSC and a couple others). Is
there only one DX.PRG program now? Before, they had separate ones
for B&W and Color. One last thing - I transfered it via Jeff Lomicka's
Whack facility and Stransf. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan
PS. Are the files in the .ARC the only necessary ones now? (4 files?!?)
|
2288.22 | If at first | BAHTAT::KENT | peekay | Fri Mar 23 1990 03:02 | 21 |
|
OK...
I transferred the ARC file in Kermit Binary mode. I haven't used
Stransf so I can't comment on whether that would affect the issues.
There were 4 files (I am sure I left these instructions somewhere)
The .PRG sits in the usual open area on the disk. The MROS file has to
go in a folder called MROS the other file which is a .BIT file goes in
a nother folder, the name escapes me for the moment. I think it is
DXTX.DAT I will check at home later. CHAD has the details as this
worked correctly with the D50 program. Lastly there was A library file
which as you know is aprrox 300k bytes, this was an experiment to see
if this type and volume of data will work. If you need more info we
could try a Landline call through DTN 845 2162

Paul,
I spoke to Chad at about 9:00 PM last night and got it working
shortly thereafter. I had to create just the 2 folders DX7.DAT
and MROS and then move the right files into them. I'm glad to
see Steinberg has 'cleaned up' their product by not requiring
you to run different programs for color and monochrome systems.
I also loaded in the library you sent me - it appears to have
worked - I have no way of telling right now as I don't have my
TX802 back from friends yet. All the right categories and patch
names seem to be coming up though.
Some questions: is this library the same one that was included with
2.0 of DX/TX? (I haven't compared the two yet) Have you included
some of your own patches in here? Also, was there an update to the
manual? Chad said something about 'on-line documentation' but after
looking through the different menus for 10 minutes last night, I
couldn't find anything that resembled documentation. If there was
a hardcopy upgrade, is there any way I can get a copy? If you don't
feel it's worth it, then nevermind.
Thanks,
Dan
PS. Thanks again for taking the time to upload and copy everything -
I really appreciate it.

well chaps it's good to see that you are up and running. Now what I
want in return in some voices !
Answer 1.
The library I sent was one of the 2 that I use on a day to
day basis. I can't remember what the make up of these but they are
certainly a mix of my own and other patches. I also have another of
similar size let me know if you want it.
2.
The only documentation that came with the disks was a small
Readme file which gave some detail about running under Mros. I can copy
it over if you want it was only about 30 lines. You are right there are
quite a few new features which should improve things. Do you have V1.5
of Cubase yet ? Now that really is something. Automated sliders moving
up and down on-screen during the mix are just "the end".
Good Stuff.

Oh, so it was bribery, eh? :^) I don't know when I'll be getting
my TX802 back from friends, but I'll get some patches to you ASAIC
(as soon as I can). It may be a few months...
> I also have another of similar size - let me know if you want it.
Well, if you're willing to give, I'm willing to receive :^) I'd
love to hear what you've done with 6-op FM.

Again, if you don't mind copying it, I'd like to just read what
it says (it may be quicker for you to just retype it if it's that
short). Does it have any bearing on SYNTHWORKS by itself? or does
it require Cubase?
> Do you have V1.5 of Cubase yet ? Now that really is something.
