2257.0. "Yamaha EMQ1 Sequencer" by SHAPES::BROWNM (A sound formed in a vacuum...) Wed Feb 07 1990 09:53

    I just went to the music shop and asked about the Yamaha EMQ-1 250

    It is billed as a `Tapless Recorder', but is a sequencer/disk drive.

    It is 8 track. Apparently you can do bulk dumps, or record a
    performance. The guy in the shop said you can record, say a Bass drum,
    on track 1, then play back and record the snare wherever you want it,
    playback and put in Toms, and so on.

    Now that seems, to me anyway, a pretty easy and cheap way to save
    songs.

    But the concerns I have are;

    	1.	Once recorded can you edit? (it has FF/REW/PLAY & RECORD)

    	2.	It uses `Quick Discs'. These are 2.8" and therefore not
    		standard.

    If anyone has any knowledge on this I would be grateful. I will post
    the full spec later, when I have the catalogue.

2257.1Avoid QD Sequencers If You Want To EditAQUA::ROSTEveryone loves those dead presidentsWed Feb 07 1990 10:1013

    "Quick Disks" in the US are a disaster, they are hard to find and
    expensive. Despite the fact that they store much less than the 3.5"
    variety they cost about three times as much.

    I'll wager a guess that other than erasing and overdubbing it probably
    has no editing features (i.e. cut and paste type stuff). Most of the
    home-type sequencers like the Korg SQD-8, Roland PR-100 (both of which
    also use QD) have none.

    The QX5FD is heavily discounted in the U.K. now (300 pounds).

    Mind you, you're getting close the the going rate for an ATARI
    520 with Pro 12...

    Yeah, that's a good idea!

    If the Atari's miles better, why do they market such hardware?

    Probably for the same reason someone could sell my mom and dad a
    $10K organ that lacks MIDI... ("You paid HOW MUCH????")

2257.7there are advantages..HUNEY::MACHINWed Feb 07 1990 12:219
    That's not strictly fair. Many people prefer hardware sequencers,
    either because they're used to them or because they don't take to
    point and grunt techniques. The QX5 is pretty powerful -- you can
    define macros and things to make your life easier, and they're probably
    pretty robust.

    Also, using a mouse makes your hand hurt.

    AAAAAgagagaga.

    I actually meant using the Atari mouse for manipulating the on-screen
    pointer.

    Swings and roundabouts, horses for courses, one person's meat etc. I
    must admit, I was sold on hardware sequencers before I tried Cubase.

    re .11 - sounds like a Roland MSQ-100; you can pick those up used
    (discontinued, obsolete) for $50 - $100.
