If you used Kermit to pull the file down, try again after telling
kermit to "SET FILE TYPE BLOCK" or "SET FILE TYPE BINARY". What
terror message does PKXARC display?

| What is un arcing? And what is PKxarc?
I have been trying to run D50DUMP.ARC and keep getting a locked
keyboard (as was someone else). I have set file type to binary
in Kermit, and have set the receive packet size to 80,
the same as the VAX Kermit send length. The version of Kermit that
I have on my PC doesn't seem to let you set file type to anything.
I used Kermit on my PC to copy files from an ATARI and they work
fine. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks for your help! Oh yeah - the default receive packet size
on my PC was 94, which I tried first. I don't even know if this
is critical to the file transfer, or what other parameters might
be involved.
Regards,
Bill

2187.3 | arc files | NORGE::CHAD | Ich glaube Ich tte Ich htte | Wed Dec 06 1989 08:46 | 12 |
| a .ARC file is a file that has been run through a process commonly called
ARCing. It is a compression scheme used to compress and stick many files into
one file. It is short for ARChive. You need to get a de-arcer program that
uncmopresses the file and extracts the needed files before you can run anything.
As an example, Steph Bailey sent me all 9 of the Kawai K5 patch cards as one big
file, which was a .ARC file (it was sent as something else but we'll ignore
that). I de-arced the file and I got out 18 little files. Size of the 18 files
is > the size of the .ARC file. The compression speeds up file transfers and
saves space.

2187.4 | PD DE-ARCer needed | NRADM::KARL | It's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an g | Wed Dec 06 1989 10:32 | 10 |
| Thanks for the info Chad. Does anyone have a PD de-arcer program
maybe that they can put in the MIDILIB tools library? Or does anyone
know where I can get one?
I read 1ST_README.TXT in the D50DUMP area, and it said that there
was documentation in the ARC file. I mistakenly assumed that this
meant on-line help instead of an actual document file.

Bill

2187.5 | check the conference for your computer | NORGE::CHAD | Ich glaube Ich tte Ich htte | Wed Dec 06 1989 11:58 | 5 |
| I'd suggest looking in the notes conference for your particullar computer
line (ie, ATARIST, whatever the PC clone confereence is, etc). There is
also a VMS dearcer available.

2187.6 | i've had no luck w/VAX-based deARCers. | DYO780::SCHAFER | Brad - boycott hell. | Wed Dec 06 1989 12:01 | 11 |
| I've got a couple copies of VMSWEEP, ARC, an the like ... and none
of 'em work! They all crap out in the middle of the first Xtract.
I have a de-ARCer on my Atari that works with no problems on the
same files. Very weird ....
I'd take Chad's suggestion and get an unARCed copy of a PC deARCer,
then Kermit the thing to your PC (using BINARY mode, of course). Should
be in bizness.

2187.8 | DE-ARCER FOUND | NRADM::KARL | It's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an g | Wed Dec 06 1989 15:30 | 16 |
| Thanks for all your help on this. I have located a PD de-arcer which
I have yet to try but is called ARCE.COM and is located in
SHIRE""::TSH6:[INGRAM.PUBLIC]
I got this info from note # 2229 in NAC::IBMPC. At least one person
replied that they had no problem using this on an AT with 640K.
I will reply to this not with a listing of notes in that conference
with a key word of ARC.
I'll hopefully try this out tonight. Many other de-arcers are mentioned
in that conference also.
Regards!

| I keep getting the message that Music_box.arc is "Not an Archieve"
I have used Kermit with the parm "Set File Type Binary" and also
used Zmodem with the same success.
Also wanted to add that whoever is responsible for these files,
could they please Vaxmail me and let me know how to copy some
new files to the area. I have a Midi Real Time Processor Demo
that some may find interesting and also a shreware Librarian for
the D10. I also have Zmodem for the Vax if anybody wants/needs it.
Thanks....
