2159.0. "Roland D50/MIDIlib Program Help Needed" by WFOV12::PLANT_S () Fri Nov 10 1989 08:59

I have a d50,an ibm clone with the Voyetra midi interface and I am
tring to downline load patches to the d50. on note #17 in commusic
there is a program to do this.I copied all the patches and the utillity
down to my xt and i can't seem to get them to run. This is the
procedure I follow to load patches:

1. turn internal write protect off on d50.
2. run program d50.exe on xt
3. type "s todd.z<cr>" on xt
4. hit data transfer on d50
5. hold data transfer key and select load on d50
6. hit enter key on d50

at this point in time the d50 just sits there with waiting in the
display window. A few times i tried a dump from the d50 and it
seemed to work, but most of the time it will not.
is ther anyone out there that can tell me what i am doing wrong?

2159.1Transfer files in binary ..?NRADM::KARLIt's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an gFri Nov 10 1989 10:5314
Steve,

I have basically the same set up as you, but haven't been able to
try this yet. I did, however go through a similar process last Spring
copying files from an Atari to my PC (Compaq 286).

When you down loaded from the VAX, did you use Kermit, or some such
software? The program and patches must be transferred in binary mode
(I think that is how I specified it - it's been a while). This will
create a version that your PC can use.

Good luck - I'd like to know how this works out for you!

2159.2STILL NO DICEWFOV11::PLANT_SMon Nov 13 1989 06:258
I tried running kermit agian with file type set to bin and it still
would not load. I did notice that when I dump from the d50 to the
xt the files are about twice the size as the patches I copied from
midilib. Is there another utillity I need to run on the patches
to get them to a format that the d50 can read?

Steve.

2159.3A few ideas ...NRADM::KARLIt's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an gMon Nov 13 1989 11:4826
Steve,

I don't know about any utilities. When I copied the files from the
Atari, they worked fine as is. I'd be curious to see whether or not the
patches that you saved from the D50 can be loaded back into it. If they
can, then you probably copied the files over OK, since the librarian
would be working OK. I don't know how the librarian works, but I'd
guess that your problem is one of the following:

1) The patch files on the VAX are corrupt.
2) There is a switch in the librarian that you have to use.
Not knowing the librarian, I don't know if you can set any
switches.
3) The copy from the VAX didn't work for some reason, causing
the files to be corrupt on your XT. Try again.

If the librarian doesn't work with the files that you dumped to
the XT (i. e.), the files you copied may be corrupt. But the fact
that you can get the program to execute at all would seem to indicate
that the file was copied over OK. There are a lot of variables here.
There may be some other switch in Kermit that you have to set as well,
but I'm note sure.

Good luck!
Bill
2159.4I WILL get this to work!NRADM::KARLIt's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an gFri Dec 08 1989 00:3224
I just tried running D50.EXE and got it to receive banks from my
D50 and send them back. This worked fine. However, I have the same
problem that Steve had in that I cannot get the *.Z files from MIDILIB
to load into the D50. I keep getting a communication error message
on the D50, and the keyboard locks up, and I have to re-boot.
The same as Steve, the files successfully saved from the D50 are
about twice the size as the *.Z files, and the 2 banks that I saved
are exactly the same size, as opposed to the *.Z files which vary
by as much as 2K bytes.

I have a distinct feeling that the *.Z files are corrupt somehow,
or something is really different about these files.

I even tried de-arcing them, and they were not compressed files.
I would like to try copying these down from Compuserve or where-
ever they originally came from.

Could someone point me in the right direction here? I've never used
Compuserve so if I could just get some basic help as to how to access
a directory or whatever when I'm in there, I'd probably be able
to figure out what I'm doing from there.

Thanks!
Bill

The .Z files were received off USENET mailings about 1 yrs ago;
the majority were from Nick Rothwell at U of Edinburgh. Might try
contacting him. I simply followed the directions to uudecode and
deARC.

My apologies for the troubles. 8-(

2159.6Not your fault!NRADM::KARLIt's computerized, no thing c,an go wrong nothing c an gFri Dec 08 1989 10:4215
Thanks Brad ... this is all volunteer work on your part so I wouldn't
refer to it as your fault.

If I can push my luck here though, if you could just give me a pointer
as to where (how) to contact this guy, that would be great. I've
never used USENET so I'd need basic instructions as to how to make
contact this way, for instance. Just a pointer to somewhere that
explains this would be great. I could (should) do some digging
myself!

The patch dumper works great, though, so it was copied right.

Thanks,
