2146.0. "Jim Ravan's Goodbye Topic" by BARDIC::RAVAN () Mon Oct 23 1989 17:53

You know, somehow I never thought I would be writing one of these notes...

On November 17th, after 12+ years with Digital, I'm leaving the company.
I'm sort of a triskaidekaphobic, so maybe the fact that this is my
thirteenth year here has something to do with it. I used to read notes
describing neat work other engineers were leaving DEC for, and frankly, I
was envious, but I was sure I would never leave. And now, it has happened
to me.

I have accepted a position with AVID, a startup company in Burlington, MA
that makes a MAC-based computer editting system for television and film
companies. I'll be writing the software to digitize and manage the sound
processor, a Motorola 56K DSP chip, which is capable of stereo at CD
sampling rates. After that, I'll be adding MIDI to their system. I knew I
had made the right choice when I called them back to accept and they told
me they would have to send me to Paramount, Lorimar, and Warner Brothers to
get first-hand knowledge of their users' needs.

Leaving COMMUSIC will be a sad experience. When I started this notesfile
in 1984, I had no idea it would become as popular as it has. That is a
credit to all the knowledgeable people who contribute here regularly. In a
way, this was just about the only outlet I had for discussing computers and
music, and I will miss it and all of you. Thank you for five great years.

regards,
-jim

    Jim,

Best wishes on your new venture. And many, many thanks for starting
COMMUSIC. It's been a unique and invaluable resource for myself and

well, if you're leaving DEC, you might as well leave for a really
interesting job ! Sounds great, and best of luck ! Will this impact
    COMMUSIC's home system ?

Gee, Jim ... I'm really sorry to hear you're leaving (more for us than
for you - sounds like a great opportunity).

    Best wishes to you.

Good luck, Jim! Fortunately, I was able to find the most exciting job around
WITHOUT leaving DEC. I hope your new company does well in these hard times.

Good luck, Jim. You should be happy that COMMUSIC lives on, even though
many of the original contributors are no longer with us. The conference
has certainly evolved over the past five years!

Yes, I remember the early days reading about the starts of MIDI, questions
like would MIDI allow anyone to be a Beethoven, talking about racks of DX7s,
etc. I was a TAG in 84 and mostly just read and remember Jim's name and
contributions.

Good luck!!!

I, too, want to thank Jim Ravan for starting and keeping this
conference. It alone has been responsible for my education not only in
synthesizers, but in Sound Reinforcement, Home Studios, Computers in music, etc.

I also hold you responsible for my having spent more money on one area
than I have one any other thing (even my car). 8^).

well, although i'm sure you do not remember, a long long time
ago you were of some considerable assistance to me an and a
bunch of old dec-10 folk trying to figure out this dbms-32
fangled thing on them overgrown pdp-11's. years later and
len gives me this pointer to this conference ( which could be
named wallet from hell) and there's a familiar name.

I actually ended up somewhat proficient in making dbms32 databases
perform well before assuming a new life. I credit much of this
with due to your very patient responses to my often silly
questions. I guess by the mere creation of this notes file, i may
someday end up somewhat proficient at midi. A tad indirect but
nearly 10 years later and an influence once again.

Best wishes and good luck in your new endeavors.

2146.12I blame (and thank) you personally!DREGS::BLICKSTEINConliberativeTue Oct 31 1989 13:1213
Well, I could be belligerant and harbor malice about the fact that
your efforts in COMMUSIC have resulted in an expensive,
time-consuming habit that regularly wreaks havoc on my finances.

But no.... I won't do that.

For some strange reason, my inclination is to thank you.

    So best wishes and thanks,

    ;-)

    Jim,

Thanks for starting this conference up, as it is such a great forum
for sharing ideas, getting help, etc.!

Whenever I get ready to make a purchase, have a question, or
just want to get the latest info on what's happening, I always
look here! It's great to be able to see what other people are doing,
    and express your own ideas.

Best of luck on your new job, it certainly sounds very interesting!
