2134.0. "Timing problem with sequence playback" by CREKE::WOZNIAK () Mon Oct 09 1989 17:18

    Occasionally I have a problem with my Prophet 2000 playing notes
    or chords slightly out of time when running sequences from my
    MC500. It seems to occur at random spots in the songs, and is
    a case of the note/chord sounding a 16th or 8th note later than
    it should. The few times that I have run sequences with different
    keyboards, I have not noticed the problem occuring. Therefore, I
    believe it is a problem with the Prophet and it's receiving of
    the note information.

    Any theories as to what might cause this?

2134.1Maybe try another cable?FULMER::ROBSONBFri Nov 03 1989 09:0019

    I had a similar problem running a DX7 with an ordinary audio
    Five-Pin-DIN cable instead of a "proper" MIDI cable connected to
    my sequencer.
    The poblem was cured when I replaced the cable, which maybe had
    a high resistance conductor and couldn't cope with the MIDI throughput,
    especially when there was lots of controller data.
    Incidently, I find reasonable quality Five-Pin-DIN audio cables
    usually serve as MIDI cables quite well, and I have a STAR Network
    using a Phillip Rees' 1X10 MIDI THRU box which eliminates the need
    to Daisychain.
    Maybe try another cable Ross?

    The problem isn't resistance (wire is pretty much wire, and resistance
    is not the sole determining factor in a cable's bandwidth; capacitance
    and inductance are probably more important) as much as it is shielding,
    which determines noise susceptibility. Capacitance might be an
    issue, but MIDI's 32Kbit/sec data rate is not really that far out
    of the audio range.

    But the bottom line is, just because the connector's the same doesn't
    mean the cable will work.
