2110.0. "Simple MIDI interface and S/W" by LISVAX::DAVID (Jos David -> SWAS, Portugal) Mon Sep 04 1989 06:23
Hello Everybody!
After almost 3 years of almost total inactivity (in what concerns to
music), I've started to (try to) make some music again. I've unpacked
the boxes where everything was tied up, connected all the wires, and
started to play a little (just for fun), and also re-read some of the
manuals.
What led me to discover what was the purpose of 3 little DIN sockets
on the back of my Roland JX-3P, named MIDI IN, OUT and THROUGH.
I have been reading this conference for a while now, a and I've
realized some of the benefits that can be derived from MIDI.
I am now asking for the help of other noters, in order to take the
most advantage of MIDI, with the smallest possible investment and
the usage of my (MIDIzised) present equipment, wich appart form
the JX-3P consists of an Amstard 1512 PC (IBM PC compatible).
What I'm looking for, specifically, is some kind of MIDI interface for
the PC (I wonder if MIDI is RS-232 compatible), and some kind of
sequencing software (possibly not to fancy, but the more goodies the
better)
Thanks to all of you for reading this, and to any reply.
regards,
david

| I would suggest reading note 1074 (Passport Master Tracks Pro),
since it's basically the best sequencer s/w around (there.... that's
a pretty unbiased statement! :-)
It gets harder if you are trying to notate your works.... PS,
Congrats, I just got into MIDI too!! Pretty fun!

2110.2 | Use keywords and intro topics. | DYO780::SCHAFER | Brad - boycott hell. | Tue Sep 05 1989 11:13 | 19 |
| There are lots of topics in this conference that will help you out.
If you're interested in MIDI to RS232 interfaces, do:
Notes> DIR/KEY=MIDI_TO_RS232 or
Notes> SHOW KEY/FULL MIDI_TO_RS232.
If you're interested in sequencers for the an IBMpc or compatable, use
the above commands with keywords IBM or SEQUENCER.
If you're interested in notation/scoring software, use the keyword
SCORING.
If you're interested in finding out what's out there, or would like to
browse thru recommendation notes, use the keyword GETTING_STARTED.
And don't forget to read topic 1.*.

| Brad:
You're to be commended for your upkeep of KEYWORDS. I'm sure that
most people don't even think about refering to them, because most
conference moderators (myself included) can't bring ourselves to
undertaking the task.
Thanks!
