2102.0. "Want Cheap SGU w/aftertouch for Wind Controller" by KOBAL::DICKSON () Mon Aug 28 1989 15:03

I just acquired a (cheap) wind controller and have run up against a
limitation in my FB01 sound module that previously I didn't care
about: it doesn't respond usefully to aftertouch.

Notice I say "usefully". It will let you use aftertouch to control
the amount to which the LFO modulates pitch, but this is not really
what a wind player is looking for.

Using the controller's built in sound generator (this is a Casio DH200
we are talking about here), my wife even likes the results. Doesn't
sound like a machine. But the DH200 is pretty chintzy as an SGU, and
doesn't have a MIDI in anyhow.

So what I want is to trade the FB01 in on something that will respond
to aftertouch in the way a wind player would expect - modulating the
level. But I don't know which modules in my price range do this.

    The constraints:

A module only. No keyboard, no sequencer, needed.
Equivalent FB01 functionality as a minimum (8 voices)
$300 or less. Used is ok.

    So what are my options?

I can't play keyboard for beans, but those 6 years on the sax as a
    teenager are still with me.

The most logical step (at least to me) would be a TX81z. Probably more
mod capabilities than you'd ever need, and very similar architecture
    (and heckuva lot better sounds).

Used to go new for $279. Don't know if they make 'em anymore, or what
they're worth used. Hot stuff for a wind controller, though.

I'll second the motion on the TX81Z.

Sal Galenas's book has some good patches designed especially for BC,
as are many of the factory patches...

A good deal would be $200. (For that price you'd probably have to
arm-wrestle me for it. I think the TZ's are GREAT machines for the
    price. None better...)

I need something that responds specifically to channel pressure (also
known as "mono aftertouch") as that is what my DH200 sends. It does
*not* send the "breath controller" signals, which some Yamaha stuff
(and just about *only* Yamaha stuff) pays any attention to.

If the TX81Z will do it, it sounds like what I should look for. (None
in the Daddy's Used list just now.)

I use a TX81Z with the Yamaha WX7 wind controller - it's good. I also use a
DX7. The TX81Z is good, but I like the DX sounds better (not surprising).

The TX81Z has a parameter that maps aftertouch to breath controller so that
the breath controller voices will repsond to aftertouch. I've tried it with
the WX7 and it works.

I didn't realize that Yamaha stopped making them. A shame. Good deal for
the money.

I fourth the motion of TX81z. Used about 200-230 is probably good. I
    may pick one up sometime.

Actually, the big Daddy's "Vintage and Classic" used equipment catalog
has a TX81Z in it, but they want $329 for it. ("excellent" condition
it says.) Well, *wanted*, as that one is sold now. Think I'll look
    in the want ads...

Go to Daddy's Nashua, tell Tim Miller that you spoke with guys at DEC (names
tomention [not that it does any good but] are Eirikur, Chad, or Dave Blickstein)
and that you are looking for a used TX81Z and will pay about $xxx where you
supply xxx. They had one in their for $229 a while back (about 3 weeks) and
he will look in the computer and find one for you. If they don't have one,
he'll call you when they do. It is important to call 1x a week anyway to check
up and see if he has one.

Want Ads (like you mentioned), can be a good idea but many poeple there try
to get their money back and charge way more than FMV (fair market value).

Rogue Music in NYC has some new ones for (gulp) $380. This
is the same price as what I originally paid for mine 3+ yrs ago.
Is this what happens when a good piece of equipment is
discontinued?. It returns to original price? (after a big blowout).
Or is Rogue just plain nutzoid?.

A noter asked me off-line for a list of the TZ ROM patches. I figured
I'd post 'em here for everyone...

A few days ago, I uploaded about 900 or so public domain TX81Z patches to
DYO780::[Midilib... someplace? ] Brad will post a note to where they finally
ended up. Some of them have modifications to use with a wind controller (WX7).
This might help get started.
