2084.0. "Making a MIDI file" by DFLAT::DICKSON () Tue Aug 15 1989 17:00

    For a little project I am trying, I have a file conversion problem.

    We start with a performance recorded in Mark of the Unicorn Performer
    version 1.2 on a Mac (this is before Performer knew about MIDI files).
    The performance is also available in EMAX format.

    The goal is to get this performance into standard MIDI file format on a
    Mac floppy, without going out and buying whatever multi-hundred-dollar
    sequencer product can do the conversion, as I only need to do this
    once. (If this project works, then more will be revealed.)

    Things we have thought of so far:

    	1) Find somebody with an EMAX, hook a Mac to the EMAX and have the
    		EMAX play the performance while the Mac records it.
    	2) Find somebody who has a later version of Performer that can
    		read the v1.2 file and write a MIDI file, who is willing to
    		do the conversion.

    Any more suggestions, or volunteers?

    Paul, how about another MAC owner with something like MTP that can
    write MIDI files, connect the two and do a multi-track record. I
    can't help you with that as I'm up in Canada, but if I was down
    your way.....

    The starting constraint is a floppy with either a Performer file on it
    or an EMAX sequence on it. I have neither Performer nor an EMAX...

    Performer version 3.1 is shipping now, by the way. List $495. (yikes)

Sounds like you guys need a midi-modem... 8-}
2084.4MIDI file format description?SMURF::NEWHOUSEWed Aug 23 1989 09:466
    Does anyone know what the midi file format is or where I can find this
    information? I looked in the directory of this file and didn't see any
    obvious pointers.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Have a look to Note 1538.
    This may give you some idea.

    Do I have any volunteers who

    	1) Already have a sufficiently recent version of Performer that
    		it knows how to write MIDI files, and
    	2) Are willing to convert a file for me?

    Being in New England helps (I am at ZKO) so this doesn't have to be
    done by mail.
2084.7Need a file for testingKOBAL::DICKSONThu Sep 14 1989 13:5312
Does anybody have a MIDI file or two that they could let me have to test out
a program I am writing? The program is supposed to be able to read and write
MIDI files (and do something interesting in between).

The program runs on VMS, so I need to get the file there. I can handle simple
data files or Macintosh "MacBinary" format.

In case anybody is interested, the program is a "time base corrector" that aids
you in turning freely entered improvisations (disregarding tempo) into a format
where time is scaled and a tempo map created such that
   1) The sequence plays back the same as before, but
   2) The beats fall on beats, etc
