| On 1984, he used an Oberheim OB8.
IN subsequent live performances, via MTV, I saw him with a Kurzweil K250.

| Finally!!
I was just wondering because I'm interested in doing the song `1984' as
an opener to the VH part of our gig. I was also seeing if I could exactly
duplicate the sound of `Jump'.

| Duplicating that patch is a breeze with any analog or analog-hybrid.
I've got it on my MKS-30....

2040.4 | Matrix-6 = 'Jump' sound | OASS::B_MCMILLAN | | Wed Jul 12 1989 17:35 | 6 |
| If you want to get the sound that Van Halen used for 'Jump', find
a Matrix-6 and get the patch 'Jumpies' (I think that's what its
called). It should be on the factory patch tape.

2040.5 | Patch 607 on Matrix1000 too | HPSTEK::RENE | learn design and study over seas... | Thu Jul 13 1989 09:55 | 8 |
| Also,
Patch #607 on the Matrix1000 is it also. None of the other patches
on the unit (including all the ones that have JUMP in the name) are
as good as this patch. Our band starts off one of our sets with
1984/JUMP, just like the album starts.

| I dont recall all the changes I made but you can change feedback to 7
on pitchpad(yamaha 6 op) and get real close.

| Re .6:
I'm not much of a Van Halen freak, but I tried out the K1-II presets over the
weekend and agree that the "OB-Brass" sound is the closest to the "Jump"
sound. Pretty close, actually, and I wouldn't be surprised if some parameter-
tweaking would make it even better! I should add that it may be a tad different
on my K1-II (from the K1), since I did have some definitely perceptible echo on
at the time.
Cheers,
Bob
