Karl you were right the 1st time, it's the Yamaha DD-5 and it commonly sells
for $79.95 at Service Merchandise (even less when on sale). AC adapter is
another $8.95 of course. I've got one. It works. Cheap and effective, but no
bells and whistles.
Yes there is a whole note on the DD-5. Do a dir/title="DD5" .

2015.4 | Roland pads--felt great! | GIAMEM::LAFLAMME | | Fri Jun 16 1989 15:53 | 23 |
| Well, I dunno if this is too much, but...
I saw those Roland drum pads at Wurli's, I'm sure a lot of people
here have, is there a note on them? (len?)
They each have four (4!!!) velocity sensing areas, the pad and three
rims (they're triangles).
It's 16 pad (the MIDI brain) capable and can stack 3 notes on a
hit. Note that if you use all rims, only four can be plugged in.
The setup was into an R-8 (of course) and also had a kick pad.
4" and very weird feeling (imo), but then again you could get used
to it if you need space.
Fritz said it'll destroy $3500, but was unclear (I didn't ask him)
whether that included the R-8 or not.
Four pads (16!), kick pad and MIDI brain (possibly R-8) for $3500...
I thought it had a nice feel (except kick), how's the price d'ya
think?

2015.5 | I believe I put a note in YODA::DRUMS | WEFXEM::COTE | Throw out your gun and tiara!! | Fri Jun 16 1989 16:31 | 17 |
| That's the PM-16 brain and PD-3 (4?) and PD-1 (kick pad) that you were
looking at. The drummer in my last band used the same set-up into an
HR-16. I won't speak for him, but I personally preferred the set-up
to real drums. (Not to insinuate that he didn't.)
It broke down into a smaller area, one steamer trunk.
The big advantage (to me) was that I could run a MIDI cable from my
sequencer/keyboard rig to his drums and either play a drum sequence
or supplement the percussion part from my keyboards.
Soundcheck was a riot. The drummer went to the board and I played the
drums from the keyboards. All these drum noises and no drummer...
That price may be steep...

Re .5
That does sound steep. I've got a setup similar to what Edd
described (pads into an octapad controlling an HR-16) only
they're Tama Techstar pads, not Roland. The octapad may not
give you the flexability of the PM-16 brain, but it's still
very functional, the new Pad-80 even more so.
I think the Roland kit by itself goes for around $1200 new. Not sure
what the R-8 goes for, but you can add that plus a few hundred
for hardware and I think you'd come out way below $3500.

2015.7 | The whole thing, then? | GIAMEM::LAFLAMME | | Fri Jun 16 1989 17:00 | 16 |
| Well, originally I asked `how much does this set go for?'
and I think he answered `all in all $3500.'
So that could be that it included:
4 pads, kick pad, drum cage and mounting hardware, D-8, the brain
and the two Peaveys (was it? or Marshall, whatever) on either side
of it.
I could be wrong. I prepared myself for hearing, `$3500 for the
stickers you put on the gig boxes' and then having to worry about
asking `well how much are the DRUMS?'
Maybe he did mean the whole shmeer.

2015.8 | | HPSMEG::LEITZ | butch leitz | Tue Jun 20 1989 15:11 | 20 |
| My 3 cents (My price went up):
The PD31 pads (the triangled pads) go for around 130 or so a piece,
and that may be list. Sounds like a rape-job to me. I've played the
set in Wurli's or Union or somewhere - I don't particularly LOVE the
pads, but I do LIKE them. I'd have to shut off (or lower sensitivity)
on one rim where I chronically hit rim shots if I owned them. I've
thought about getting a couple pads for effects, running them through
an octapad & into any suitable midi gear the band has on hand to do
dog woofs or latin_alien_butterfly_barks or what have you.
But seriously, if you want to go all electronic, look at all the options
for controller merge boxes before plunging into that kind of deal. Test
alot of pads like Dynacords, other Rolands, Tamas, Yamahas, etc for feel.
You'll find you can get used to a "weird feel" pretty quick - then
find a drum machine or synth-you-like to give you the sounds you want.
For 3500 I'd buy some cheapo pads & stands, a couple good electronic
foot controllers (like DW EP1s or equivalent), then get a SAMPLER (or
sampler player) and have ANY sound at your disposal - perfect drums,
latin perc, orchestral perc, etc.

Latin_alien_butterfly_barks? Hmmm. We'll have to try that one!

2015.10 | How about the Y-word drum pad setup? | SNIPER::HNELSON | Evolution in action | Wed Nov 14 1990 09:49 | 15 |
| Someone advertised a Yamaha drum pads and drum tone generator setup for
$1200. It included four pads plus two bass pads, mounting hardware and
cables. Allegedly this was $2000 new a couple years ago. About that
time, I played with an apparently similar system at a NYC show; it was
fun.
I wouldn't consider dropping $1200 for a big toy like this (I'm not
even a rank beginner drummer) but maybe I could knock the guy down.
Does anyone have any opinions about this? Does two years of beating on
render these guys broken? Is the Yamaha setup intelligent enough to
merge with a sequence? I'd like to be able to augment a sequenced drum
track by beating on the pads, capturing my violence for later
reproduction.
Thanks - Hoyt
