Greetings, I have been reading, learning from and enjoying commusic for quite awhile, however, this is my first attempt to add to it. My name is Gary Ryan and I work in the NYA Network Group. I am a part-time musician (keyboards) and play about 35-40 weekends per year, mostly wedding and private stuff. I currnetly own the following: Roland D-10, Yamaha DX27, 360 systems Midi Bass and a pile of outboard gear (reverbs etc.) I also have recently started sequencing via a used Yamaha Qx21. I also have a host of Peavey mixers, power amps speakers etc. for live preformance. I am interested in expanding my number of available sounds, both for sequencing and for live work. I have been following with interest the Kawai PH50. I realize it has small keys (mid-size I think!) however, I am mostly interested in it as a sound module. The fact that it's portable will be a plus however for business trips etc. Does anyone have any feeling for this thing (price,preformance etc.)? I've followed many discussions within these notes and know you folks will be able to offer some helpful insight into this. P.S. I have 2 small children and a BIG monthly house payment, so I'm attempting to keep this purchase in the reasonable 300-400 range. Thanks in advance Gary

1988.1 | Check out the K1m | FGVAXL::MASHIA | We're all playing in the same band | Tue May 09 1989 16:20 | 21 |
Hi Gary, If I were you, I'd consider getting the Kawai K1m. It's essentially a keyboardless PH50 with a couple of advantages 1) It's programmable, where the PH50 is not and 2) It's obviously smaller, and it sounds like the last thing you need is to lug around another keyboard, even a small one. A disadvantage is that the K1m doesn't have the built-in drum box on a separate drum channel. I got a K1m recently for $399, which is just within your $ range. Otherwise I'd suggest the K1r, which is the same thing in a rackmount configuration, but which costs more. Also, I think there's already a note on the PH50. Try a DIR/TITLE= "PH50" and see what you come up with. Hope this helps, and welcome to the Brotherhood of COMMUSIC WRITEers. Rodney M. | |||||

Hi again, Thanks for the quick reply, I've listened to the K1r yesterday, I think it's strings and Rhodes type piano are far superior to my D-10, however, the rest of it sounds very close to whatI've got. this isn't to imply that it dosen't sound good, just that I am pretty much hearing this type of sound now.....I've also posted a note about the Ensoniq stuff at 1488, prehaps you folks could take a peak there and offer some comments? Again, thanks.... I'm enjoying this so much it's hard to get back to work. Gary (new guy but not for long) Ryan PS: no decision yet on ph50, k1 or anything else. I've bought to many things thru the years on impulse only to be un-happy 2 weeks later... I'm now a shopper first and a buyer second. |
