1982.0. "Steinberg M.ROS and CUBASE (or CUBIT) Discussion" by RDGENG::MCNAUGHTON (Bruce, IE Process and Quality) Wed May 03 1989 05:48

I've been a user of the Steinberg PRO-24 package for the Atari for
about a year and a half.

I recently received a brochure from Evenlode Soundworks in the UK
indicating that they are now totally Steinberg!

The brochure highlighted some new Steinberg products to be released the end
of May:

1) M.ROS - Midi Realtime Operating System

A realtime operating system for the Atari ST, Apple Macintosh and IBM PC.
   (a very interesting concept).

2) CUBIT - The successor to PRO-24 III (500 UK pounds)

CUBIT looks like a more flexible system than PRO-24 with real-time
windows and a simplified user interface. CUBIT runs on M.ROS with
   VISP (Visual Song Processing).

Some specs from the brochure: (beyond PRO-24 III)

16x64 TRACKS: 16 arrange windows each with 64 independent tracks.

M.ROS IMPLEMENTATION: Internal clock resolution 384 PPQ (pulses per
quarter note), full multitasking and network facilities.

MIDI EFFECTS PROCESSOR: Realtime simulation of delay and echo effects.

MACRO SOUND EDITING: Soundbanks stored in the Standard Synthworks
format can be edited via the free "satellite" Desk Accessory.

KEY EDIT: The Key Editor displays recorded notes in relation to a
piano keyboard; seven and one half octaves can be displayed simultaneously.

CHORD RECOGNITION: Displays the name of the chord played on the MIDI
   Keyboard.

3) AVALON - the M.ROS stereo universal sample processor. (200 UK pounds)

   From the flier:

AVALON is a networking system for digital sound processing and includes
re-synthesis and extensive library functions. AVALON can be freely
configured to suite a wide range of digital sampling systems. For
example, you can use AVALON for sound design, digital editing, sound
research, as well as conversion and transfer of sample libraries
   between different samplers.

AVALON includes a "time domain" and "frequency domain" editing package and
   runs on M.ROS.

All of these are planned to be available on 31-May-1989.

I'll be glad to send anyone a copy of the flier - or have some more of the
text put online - if you are interested.

For PRO-24 III users, there is an update option - (in the UK 258.70 pounds)
Which is valid for one month starting May-31.

Has anyone else heard of these new products? The March ST World has
an article covering the Frankfurt 1989 Music Show. Steinberg Cubit
was mentioned as well as some other new software/hardware products.

Bruce

If anyone has more info on CUBIT please post. I saw an ad and short
blurb in KEYBOARD (and a sample screen) and it looked quite interesting.
Within a year I would like to get a sequencer with some notational capabilities
for data entry and manipulation. Does CUBIT do this? The sample screen
leads me to believe it does. NOtator does and I am leaning heavily
towards Notator.

Paul , would love to get the demo as well.

Re: CUBIT, do you know if it will read PRO24 III files (Songs/Patterns)
and if the same upgrade service is available as with the PRO24 III ?

My only concern would be the fact that this will be V1.0 but the idea
of a "trade-up" is an attractive one. I am in consideration-mode. The
    demo should help.

I took delivery of CUBASE on friday. Note the change of name.
Apparently ICL (Who?) have an office product called CUBIT so CUBASE
    it is.

Yes it will read PRO-24 songfiles..

So far it looks brilliant, real cut and paste song arranging at last.
No printing of scores though which is a surprise and a step backwards.
I would say that if you are currently a 24 user then it is worth
the upgrade. I am not sure that on it's own it would justify the
500 or so pounds. Steinberg will be updating all the Synthworks
programs to be M-ROS compatible so if you have a MEGA-st you can
multi-task the librarians and the sequencer.

I haven't got time for a full review any questions ?

I have the demo/tutorial. It will take hours to upload. any one
    need it ?

     Hi Paul,

Just got my upgrade! I'm impressed! Much easier to use!

I like the realtime music displays too!

Only one problem! I've got a color monitor!

and CUBASE only works on a high resolution black and white monitor!

    I am still learning "CUBASE".

I have found a function that got me really excited so I thought
    I'd post here for comments.

CUBASE comes with a Desk Accessory called Satellite. Satellite
can be called from any program but is specifically designed to work
with CUBASE. It allows you to call up voicebanks from Steinberg Voice
editors. Fortunately I have these for most of my instruments. You
can then post individual voices to any synth from satellite. You
can also make basic changes to the voices via a set of graphic sliders
and mouse. These changes are basic tymbral changes like
attack-decay-fatness-Brightness etc. There are 10 sliders for each
synth type. The system pushes these changes through sysex to the
synth via the designated midi-channel. Having arrived at a sound
that you are happy with, you can then post the new sound through
to CUBASE which records the patch in sysex format on the active
    track at the current location.

    Neat or what?

1982.8DRAKAR::HANNAWatch this spaceWed Jul 19 1989 05:5226
Got mine upgrade this weekend. First impressions are that the
documentation is amazingly good and aplenty. I spent about three hours
just reading through it before running the program.

Music editing has now incorporated both the PRO24 grid and the PRO16
(of commodore days and still my preferred one) with a piano grid
running down the side and the notes that scroll over the keys. Real
    easy.

I also like the ability to defined your own instrument set up (which
track talks to which instrument on which midi channel) and be able to
save this and get it loaded every time you boot.

But hit my first problem soon after when trying to load a PRO24 Song.
It came back with "Internal Code Error 22924" and began mis-behaving.

Booted again and tried to load another song and that worked. So at the
moment it looks like I may get to some of my songs but not all.

Will start hassling Steingberg (I have their number in Germany) to find
    more.

But still, this is getting to be one complete package. I'm impressed.

1982.9Displaying CUBASE versionDRAKAR::HANNAWatch this spaceWed Jul 19 1989 10:5230
Turns out (according the the Steiberg "hotline" in the UK) that PRO24
was not detecting that a file was "corrupted" when loading and that
when it was later saved, the corruption was propagated. So along comes
CUBASE, detects this problem and returns an error.

It seems that the loading routines in CUBASE have been corrected and
that a version with the fix is available but still as V1.0 and not say.
    V1.1 or V1.0-001 ...

To find out what version you're using, hold down the CTRL-SHIFT-HELP
keys. CUBASE will display the date the software was built. If the date
is earlier than the 13th of June 1989 then you've got an old version
and there is a new one available ! (I'll be trying this tonight).

I also asked about any features that are known not to be working
and there are two big bugs:

    - Human Sync: Don't use the transport controls when using Human Sync.
This will make the system crash (first thing I'm trying when I get
      home tonight)

    - Cycle Record: Don't set the auto-quantization on when recording. It
may take half an hour for it to complete the quantization.

I may not be 100% accurate with the descriptions above as I just got
this over the phone, and I've only used CUBASE for a few minutes.

1982.10CUBASE 1.5 - some new features.RDGENG::MCNAUGHTONBruce, IED Process and QualityTue Jan 23 1990 18:0038
CUBASE 1.5 has been available since Christmas ...

Seems to work fine ... and has some new features..
with a number of minor additions and fixes.

     Some new CUBASE features..

        M.ROS:

The OS now has drivers for various hardware such as
Fostex MTC-1/R-8, Steinberg MIDEX and MIDEX + (both new), and
C-Lab Unitor. Also some references to Mac system usage
so a Mac version may be available soon.

        Dynamic MIDI Manager Window:

A graphical way to set parameters over MIDI, useful for
effects and mixer boxes. (you can make your own display!)

        Some others:

Support for 19 inch monitors, auto save, mouse speeder,
more quantize modes, chord recognition and display,

Some new Steinberg HW goodies ...

        MIDEX:

        4-midi outs and 2-midi ins
        4-ROM post expander slots

        MIDEX +:

        Same as MIDEX, plus
        Timecode synchronizer (SMPTE/EBU formats - IN/OUT)

I got my V1.5 update a few days ago and this was a very impressive feature.
To elaborate a bit more: from a set of shapes (fader, rotary swich, on/off
buttons ...etc) you select which of these objects you want and define what midi
messages (sys. ex.included) they send out when you alter their settings.

You can then "build" a panel of these shapes/objects to do all kind of
manipulations to your SGU's.

These manipulations can be recorded as either a static situation (e.g. set
mix volumes/panning/timbre at the start of a song) or in real time while the
music is playing.

Snapshots may be taken of current settings and these are iconized allowing
you to come back to these settings later.

The created panel may be saved independantly of the music thus allowing
such a set up to be retrieved and used on other peices/songs.

I would certainly recommend CUBASE to anyone looking for sequencing software
on the Atarist (there may even be a version out for the Amiga - I'm not sure.)

I have copied the Cubase For Macintosh demo version into MIDIlib.
MIDI::A$:[MIDILIB.DEPOSIT], but it will undoubtedly soon be moved
by Dan to a proper location.

This is probably not identical to the release version (it doesn't use
MIDI Manager). I'll know when I receive my real copy, and post what's
    different.
