1895.0. "MIDI Program (Patch) Changers" by FGVAXX::LAING (Soft-Core-Cuddler*Jim Laing*261-2194) Tue Feb 07 1989 22:52

Although a discussion has started in note 1890 about this, it's
a note about MX-8 receiving patch changes, etc. so I thought I'd
start a separate note on MIDI program changers.

    I've found 2 so far:

Yamaha MPC1 MIDI Program Controller (I tried it), about $100
-Numeric keypad, plus CLEAR and RECALL buttons
-One mode is "enter patch # (1,2 or 3 digits) and press
"recall" to send it to the device.
-Other mode (called "direct" lets you send program changes
1 thru 9 with a single keystroke (just hit the number
button for the patch (1 thru 9 only) that you want.
-About 5"x3"x1", like a slightly oversized calculator
		-Uses wall-bug (12VDC) for power

AMR MIDI Director (I've seen but not TRIED this model); $90-$100
-Same as above, plus START and STOP buttons; about $100
-Enter patch #, then press "ENTER" (or was it RECALL?)
-Sends MIDI Start/Stop commands, for use w/drum machine
    		 or sequencer
-Runs off 9V battery OR via "wall bug" power supply
    		-Similar size, like oversized calculator

Rumor has it that Alesis makes/made a device like this, but I have
no info on it, other than that it *might* be the "MIDIkey"

My sputtering memory banks delivered this :

Voyetra 'VOYCE' MIDI control center.. patch chgs, sysex, etc. They
sell it as an adjunct to your not-quite-a-master-controller keyboard
    synths.
