1883.0. "Oberheim OB8K Analog Keyboard Synth" by AQUA::ROST (But the kids can't dance to it) Tue Jan 31 1989 21:39

    This came in off USENET. The correspondent is an avid Oberheim nut.
    This sounds like yet another hot machine. Finally, an *analog*
    machine to take on all these grungy digital synths 8^) 8^)
    Actually, this one and the E-Mu box sound like the hot tickets for
    1989....

Well, the "rumors" are true. I actually knew the details weeks ago, but I
promised my leak at Oberheim that I'd keep quiet until after NAMM, and as his
or her job was riding on that, I took my promise seriously. Anyway....

The new synth is called the Oberheim OB-8k. It will be an analog synthesizer
on the Matrix-6/6R/1000 architecture, fully compatible with the existing
editor and librarian software for those machines. In addition, it will have
a number of special features that set it apart from previous Oberheim boxes.
It will be an eight-voice unit, with a full-sized 61-note keyboard, and
(fanfare please) fully multitimbral. 1000 patches on board, along with 100
MIDI system setups that will allow for complete control of up to four outboard
slave units; stereo outputs with defeatable programmable chorus; velocity,
aftertouch, and release velocity sensitive keyboard with springloaded pitch
bender and free-turning mod wheel, volume and sustain pedals and patch chain
pedal available; onboard defaults available for guitar synth control; and a
retail price of $1295. Look for it to be shipped in late March.

And yes, I'm getting one, and probably a Matrix 1000 to boot. I've finally
admitted to myself that as much as I love my Xpander, I am never repeat
NEVER going to be able to afford a Matrix 12. (sigh.) And in terms of MIDI
control, the OB-8k may actually turn out better!

That's all I have right now; more as it becomes available.

1883.1Let's hope they update the Matrix.DYO780::SCHAFERBrad - back in Ohio.Wed Feb 01 1989 10:0712
    This sounds like a real neat box, EXCEPT ...

    There's no way to expand the unit. For example, what happens if I
    decide that 8 voices aren't enough?  I can't just add a Matrix-6 or
    Matrix 1000 for spillover, because they're NOT polytimbral. And I
    don't want to pay another $1300 for 8 extra voices.

    I hope they come up with a mod for the Matrix 1000 that makes it the
    functional equivalent of an "OB-8k expander" (no pun intended). 8
    voices just aren't enough anymore (IMO).

               I need a rack mount version of this baby.
               Was there any mention about that?.

    It's called the Matrix 1000. Not polytimbral and only 6 voices. From
    what I've heard, this is actually an extension of that box. Current
    news is nada on a rackable OB8k.

    	I've tried the Matrix 1000 and was not really impressed. It
    would be nicer if it was multi-timbral and user editable (wo/P.C.),
    which sounds like a OB8Kr.

1883.5What Do You Want for $500?DRUMS::FEHSKENSWed Mar 01 1989 12:336
    See the Matrix-1000 note for some contrasting views. Many people
    find this box unmatched at the price, its monotimbrality and nonlocal
    programmability notwithstanding.

I for one don't think monotimbrality is a major fault (not that I have one
of these boxes). If you need > 1 timbre than buy another box. 5 of these
boxes = ~$2250 = 5 multi and 30 polyphonic (with some restrictions) ~=
price of a good quality multitimbral box.

    	I'm not knocking monotimbral synths. I'm just not interested
    in a f***ing Matrix 1000. I *am* interested in the OB8K and the
    availability of a rack mount version. Period.

    			Isn't this the OB8K topic?.

1883.8latest bit of non-news...NRPUR::DEATONMon Jun 12 1989 11:016
	I hadda call Oberheim last week to order a manual and asked about the
OB8K. He said they were scheduled to send it out in August, but there seemed
to be delays... He said very little - just gave me fluff about top secrecy.
