1859.0. "Soundtracks?" by MIZZOU::SHERMAN (Love is a decision ...) Thu Jan 12 1989 12:37

I'm posting this here for your perusal/amusement/responses/interest.

Note 77.0 Soundtracking? No replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll cross-post this in the COMMUSIC conference ...

Just tossing this idea out ... I enjoy combing this conference as
a viewer, not an animator. But, I know there are animators also
participating here. My *real* hobby is music synthesis (original
instrumental stuff). Last year I put out a short album (about 30
minutes) which I distributed to my friends. I've gotten good reviews
and even a few serious suggestions about someday doing soundtracking.
Of course, everybody and their dog (if their dog is into synthesizers)
wants to do soundtracking. I don't do gigs and am not a musician.
I just have fun. This note file is becoming to some extent
work-related in that we're talking about Digital doing some animation.
And, if you've seen some of the other animation going on, there's usually
some good music in the background. This usually requires more
equipment than I currently have (SMPTE linkage between video and
the synthesizers), but nowadays such linkage can be had for about
$300-$500, so I could pretty quickly ramp up to handle that kind
    of thing.

What I want to check out is a couple of things:

    	1. What noters are into music synthesis (like me) and appreciate
animation enough to maybe want to do or participate in a
    	   soundtrack on an animation project.

    	2. What noters into doing animation and are interested in working
with a synthesizer hobbyist (like me) on a soundtrack for an
    	   animation project?

    	3. How much interest would there be in supporting such projects
from other noters or from Digital?

	4. Any other ideas or info?

What might be fun would be to do a work-related animation soundtrack
project (or a collection of projects) that could go to a conference,
public TV, internal use or whatever. This way Digital could participate
in the production and get publicity and so forth.

Actually, I may be doing some soundtrack music soon (already have
    submitted one demo).

It's for a semi-commercial video about the hobby of caving.

No, I'm not getting paid for it, although I expect to get a credit
which is enough incentive for me given that I'm bounding the
amount of time I expect to spend on it.

It's been a lot of fun so far. It's surprisingly easy to create
"background" music using MIDI production techniques. I don't have
any problems synching up to the video (which I don't have).

Soundtracking is my ultimate goal. Recently I am becoming more and more
obsessed with listening to soundtrack music. I tape things from tv
and videos just to listen to the soundtracks. I rent videos
frequently and only pick ones which I think will have good
     soundtracks.

Anyone know of any schools in the Boston area which offer courses in
scoring music for film (ie. composition for film)?

1859.4If I cut 13 frames, what new tempo ends on time?ANT::JANZENMr. MSI ECL TestThu Jan 12 1989 15:028
12 years ago I read and read and read about film scoring. I'll
either participate or maybe sell you the books.
    Hesitatingly.
I have written themes for cable tv shows and used music in my shows
and once cut my animated film to some wild track music in college.

So this project seems interesting to me too.

Tom, could you please post the names of the books here?

114 bpm.

Sounds great. I have been playing around with video and sound up

Is this only for MA locals?

    Underscore was one of them.
A Los Angeles music paper/copying place called Valle Music Reproduction
has lots of books if they still exist. Actually they're sort of
in 12441 Riverside Drive North HOllywood CA 91607,
848 762 0615. Ask them what new books on film scoring they have.
    One of mine is called
underscore. Music in Modern Media is another. Kind of out of date.

Berklee has a really good Film Scoring & Composition course.
My brother-in-law is majoring in that. I learned a lot if neat things
    about soundtracks from him.

What I intended to say was that I don't HAVE to sync up to any
video. There are no precise music events that have to correspond
to video events other than starting and ending a piece at approximately
    the correct times.

As I've said, I've only submitted one piece so far. They come back
with more requirements but I doubt it. Or, of course, they could
come back with "that sucked, don't call us we'll call you". ;-)

Thanks for the reply. I will try to find out more about it. I guess I
should have qualified my question with: "courses that are taught
in the evenings and that are open to non-matriculated (not working
towards a degree) students, like me."

Thanks again. I will call them.

Berklee, as I understand it, is not someplace you NEED to graduate
from. To quote my brother-in-law: "You go for as long as you think
you need to go." I don't know if this course is offered at night,
    though. Good Luck.

Re: Berklee

I just called them. The Spring semester is already underway. They have
summer courses. All of their courses are taught during the day.
They are sending me a catalogue.

Thanks,
