1762.0. "Atari Blues" by YUPPY::GEAL () Tue Nov 08 1988 11:33

    Can anyone help me with an alternative to the Atari\Steinberg
    sequencing package which I am currently using? I am on my third
    Atari and although this one is slightly better than the others,
    it still bombs out when it gets hot, occasionaly corrupts disks
    etc.etc. Ideally I would like a system based on an Apple Mac, but
    I have the Steinberg SMP24 SMPTE generator which forms an integral
    part of the system and I would prefer to retain this. The Steinberg
    software is fine - the Atari is naff.

    Secondly - afriend will very shortly be visiting New York and would
    like to know the best place (i.e. the cheapest!) to buy a D50.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I have yet to have any problems with my ST, even after all the stuff it has
been through, including self-upgrade to 1meg by soldering sockets on the
board, being transported around *a lot*, having all components loose (not
screwed in -- I took the screws out for easy access a while back and have yet
to put them back in, etc.) My only problem was that mine came with a bum
power supply, which I have replaced with a heavy duty external. So, besides
coming with the bum supply, I have had no problems show up
(except self-imposed shorts while soldering, that have been cleared up and
have given no problems.)

I would keep on trying with the Atari. chad

    Can't speak for Steinberg (I like MTP myself), but I've never had the
    first lick of trouble with my ST. Last month I used it for terminal
    emulation around 9 hours a day and then fired up MTP for another 2-4
    hours every other night with nary a failure.

    I never thought I'd say this, but right now I'd take an ST over a Mac
    any day of the week. Like Chad, mine also gets carried all over the
    place. You sure the dealer isn't ripping you off?

    What kind of ST are you using? 520, 1040, or Mega? If you're going to
    get a D50, goto Sam Ash w/ cash in hand.

    Thanks for the replies - it's good to know that it is possible to
    use the ST reliably. I have a 1040 ST and the dealer has been pretty
    good - swapping twice without question. What was the external power
    supply that was used - I may be able to get hold of one over here
    in England.
1762.4You mean Atari power or external power conditioner?GLORY::SCHAFERBrad - banished to Michigan.Tue Nov 08 1988 13:563
    External supply? The 1040 has all power built-in (read: no bricks).

RE: -.1

Brad, I think he means which power supply did I hook up to my machine.
I did mention having an external power supply on mine (replaced the
internal). I forget what mine is.

It has 25A worth of 5v and 2 x 5A 12v or some such thing, I forget. And
requires almost no load to function correctly. A friend at school in
Utah got it for me for $30 from WICAT, who was ditching them. I am
going to use it for further expansion -- HD and FD.

I would imagine that any good well designed PCclone Power Supply could
be used. I'll review my machine tonight to see what the PS is.

But that only solves problems with bad power supplies. It is not a cure-all :-)

1762.6I've had problems too...MRSVAX::MISKINISTue Nov 08 1988 15:347
    I've had a few problems with my ST also (bought used). Recently
    I opened it up, reseated the floppy I/O cable, and it would then
    boot again. I've had no problems since...

    I can also confirm the usability of the ST.

    I have had mine (bought in U.K.) about a year now and
    have had not a jot of trouble. It gets used about 2-3 hours every day,
    more at wkends...

    What price have you got for a D50 in the U.K. ?

1762.8D50 UK price.YUPPY::GEALWed Nov 16 1988 06:034
    A D50 in the UK is currently about 1300 pounds.
    I have now got my fourth 1040. So far this seems to be behaving
    itself. My old one is undergoing 'environmental testing' by the
    distributor. I await the results with interest.

    re-1.

    I'me pretty sure you can do better than 1300 pounds. I payed 1180
    for mine about 3 months ago although the prices may have gone up
    since then. If you do end up with an St and D50 combo we could swap
    patches over the network or by post using Steph Bailey's "BUMP",
    which is a good bulk librarian available to commusicians.

1762.10Dump programs???UTROP1::VDBOSTue Nov 22 1988 08:3715
    High,

    Since I have an Atari ST as well as a Roland D10 I am wondering
    if there are any Dump utility programs available. E.g. is the handshake
    protocol for the D50 the same as for the D10? And if this is the
    case has someone a program to save and load Patches etc.?

    Please help me saving a memory card!
