1738.0. "Kawai K1r Additive vs. Roland D110 LA Rackmount" by MUSKIE::ALLEN () Wed Oct 26 1988 16:58

Some of you who got to WurlygigII seem to have been impressed
with the KAWAI K1, a model I have been comparing to the Roland D110.
In my un-scientific auditions, I have taken the synth sounds of
the K1 over the D110. Some of them are a bit noisy, but they
definitely have more "body" to them. The user interface on the
K1 also appears more intuitive. However, the D110 has great drum
and percussion sounds. In fact, that is one of the main reasons
I am leaning to a D110 to add to my setup.

I like KAWAI; they make a great product and are good people
to work with. My dealer assures me that the K1r is really a better
machine than the D110 because it will have more sounds (and PCM
samples) out for it. So far, the additional sounds I have heard
(on RAM Cards) were OK, but nothing to write home about. And, there
were not that many new good drum sounds. The same is true for the
new RAM card out for the D110; both the synth and percussion seem
    like more of the same.

Has anyone taken a critical look at both of these machines?
I'd be interested in your thoughts.

    Clusters,
    Bill Allen

The K1m and K1r are different. The K1m is a standalone box a la
MT-32. The K1r is a rackmount. As far as I know, however, the
    electronics are exactly the same.

1738.5Is this a good deal?!??$%@??MUSKIE::ALLENMon Oct 31 1988 11:3014
My local dealer is offering his demo D110 for $699.00; is that a
good deal? I have never bought electronic gear used, particularly
musical stuff. What are the drawbacks? He's offering an 18mos
    full warranty.

Also, since I can get a new one from Sam Ash for the same price,
are the potential "hassles" of mail-order better or worse?.

    Clusters,

    ps One thing that worries me is that he doesn't "stock" the D110;
although they are an authorized ROLAND dealer they seem to push
       other lines.
1738.6Ain't bad.DYO780::SCHAFERBrad - back in Ohio.Mon Oct 31 1988 12:008
If he's willing to give 18 mos. on the unit, and you can verify right
now that there are no problems with the unit, I'd buy it.

The price isn't bad, the warranty is good, and they wouldn't dare put a
buggy unit on display. Just make sure that someone hasn't beat the
thing to smitheroons (read: check all front panel controls).

Bill,

I would say that the demo D110 should be fine. It has survived the
"infant mortality" phase. I have never had a piece of Roland gear
fail on the front panel switches or otherwise. The warranty protects you and you
are supporting your local music merchant who provides that big shiny
showroom full of MIDI toys. The return shipping mailorder for warranty
repair is somewhat of a hassle. You need the box, the packing material,
shipping label, trip to the P.O. for postage, etc.

good luck,

dave

    re .7 & .6
Thanks Dave and Brad. I sprung for a new one after all.
This baby is a gas!!! Having another SGU is a quantum leap forward
in flexibility and variety. I can't wait to hear a stereo mixdown
on the big system, downstairs. I also had a chance to read through
some of the back notes on the D110 and the MT32. Seems like Roland
really tried to do something about the complaints voiced by users.
About the only thing they didn't improve on was the user interface,
which still is unacceptable but better than the MT32.

I will be interested to see what happens to KAWAI's K1. If they
push it as hard as they did the K5 it should do well in spite of
stiff competition from the D110. From the lack of response to this
note, it doesn't seem like there are many K1 fans in COMMUSICland.

Bill,

I heard the K1 at Wurlygig2 for the first time. I was very impressed with
the sound quality and variety. It seems like the perfect entry instrument
for someone who is looking for the <$1k multitimbral/drum machine/keyboard.
Kawai is playing in a tough field though with Roland, Yam, Casio, etc.
The competition is good for everyone, and hopefully will help keep the
prices down. Who knows, if the K1R price is low enough....... *^))

I tried em both side by side. In my opinion, K1 blew the doors off
the d10. The Roland has the worst sound I've heard in a while(must
    be that MT32 architecture).

I also played a D10 during my 3 week hiatus, intending to upgrade from
my ESQ-Ms. After some pretty serious comparision, I decided to
not get the D10, drum kit notwithstanding.

Excepting the built-in reverb, the ESQ was able in all but a very few
instances to reproduce most of what the D10 would do (at least
comparing factory patches) ... and the D10 wasn't that much cleaner
than the ESQ to make it worthwhile. And the ESQ pianos blow the D10
    away (again, my opinions).

In short, the D10/110 has a few more sonic possibilities, but the ESQ
is a heck of a lot easier to twiddle and set up, has a much nicer MIDI
implementation, and responds to any MIDI continuous controller
    (including aftertouch).

If I were buying new, I might go for the D10, but I don't think
upgrading to one from an ESQ would buy much.

I agree 100% with Rich. I compared the two side-by-side and I thought
the K1r blew off the D110 also. And it's cheaper too!

In an earlier reply to this topic, I trashed the D110 in favor
of the K1r. Now it seems I have both.
