1734.0. "Bass Pedals/Sounds" by FGVAXX::LAING (Soft-Core-Cuddler*Jim Laing*261-2194) Mon Oct 24 1988 14:40

    I searched for and did not find any notes on ... FOOT PEDALS, the
    kind found on organs, that is. What's out there, both pre-MIDI
    and MIDI? Anything of more than one octave? Some that produce
    their own sound, some that just send MIDI? Of the older models,
    which ones might still be a "good buy" if available?

    My particular needs/wants are for some bass pedals (one octave would
    do, 2 to 2 would be nice) to add to my setup for use on my own
    (i.e. not with the band...). I'd like a few bass sounds, maybe
    a mellow bass-guitar sound, a brighter bass-guitar sound (maybe
    even a "popped-string" sound), an acoustic bass would be nice, a
    few "pipe-organ bass sounds" could be useful. Of couse, I could
    always get a sampler, but wanted to go lower-budget, and don't have
    much rack-space to spare.

    So, let's talk bass pedals, etc...

1734.1Never seen one though...WEFXEM::COTEIt looks like Fruit Loops out there!Mon Oct 24 1988 14:586
    Pedal controllers aren't toooooo common, but Keyboard usually has
    an ad... MIDI 'em to your favorite synth and away you go.

    ...and there's always a retrofit.

A few months back I saw a few at Hampshire Music in Nashua. They looked like
Organ pedals and were MIDIed. NO sounds opf there own.

The price quoted me was ---> $500

    There is a company called Fast Forward designs that makes something
    called the MIDIstep. It has a setup of footpedals kinda like the
    Moog Taurus, about an octave and a half. This is a remote midi
    controller for your feet. It sends out MIDI info only (no tone
    generator).

    By the way, these are the same guys that did the software for the
    HR-16.

1734.4Bass for the masses...MUSKIE::ALLENMon Nov 28 1988 11:4312
    I don't know if this should be in another note, but...

    I've been asking around locally to see if there is a way to get
    that big, fat, overbearing bass sound you hear particularly from
    REGGAE bassists. You know the sound I mean, just the other side
    of distortion (yeah!). I have yet to hear a factory patch that
    comes close and layering still doesn't quite get me there. Is it
    possible to get this kind of sound in MIDIland?

    Starving for bass-nourishment,

      I use the "round wound finger bass" chip in my MIDIbass. Pretty
    boomy, not much on harmonics, and definitely loads up the bass.

    Sorry Charlie,reggae bass sounds man-ja got to get da ganga-along
    with a rack (figure 400w per ch.!!!!!!)and as many 18"woofers as
    you can fit on your stage!that with a fender jazz+roundwound strings
    will give the fattest reggae sound you've ever heard----not feasable
    for me though!

    Re: .6

    I get along fine with only 220 watts and a single 15, but for *live*
    most of the sound *is* in the amplification.

    For studio? Get rid of almost everything above about 1 to 2 KHz,
    boost in the 100 Hz range and compress like crazy. With that kind
    of tweak, you can use almost any bass patch you have that sounds
    remotley like an electric bass.

    If you want the sound straight out of your synth, good luck. Try
    closing down your filters quite a bit and have a good sustain level
    on your envelopes, I guess would be somewhere to start.
