Fred, if you are a regular customer at Union Music, go talk to Jeff
(the keyboard guy) or Carl. I know that they still have at least
one EX-8000 (the rack version) in stock and might be willing to
let you copy the tape, or at least the listings.

| thanks for the info. it worked out fine. they are going to let me
have a tape for 5 bucks. As it turned out I actually bought the
keyboard there used and the person selling the keyboard hadnt supplied
a tape. Jeff was very cooperative when I called back and, as you
said, still has a couple of tapes to support his stock. Thanks again.

1729.3 | Board .NE. Keyboard | DRUMS::FEHSKENS | | Wed Oct 19 1988 15:47 | 7 |
| .0 employs a usage that I am seeing with increasing frequency and
which is confusing for the modest advantage of saving three letters,
namely referring to a *keyboard* as a "board". The unadorned term
"board" usually implies a *mixing board* to the electronic musician.

Can anyone give me any information on the Korg DP2000, digital piano?
I am a first time buyer and am trying to decide between this keyboard
and an Ensoniq ESQ1. My needs are that I play the piano with a
real piano sound, yet my 15 year old has a "band" and want to use
it for his music. I like the Korg because it has 76 keys with a
real piano touch. I would have to add a module to get a true piano
sound. I like the ESQ1 for its real piano sound, but it has only
5 octaves with organ-like keys.
I have investigated the ESQ1 which every owner gives a thumbs up.
But I have not heard much about the Korg DP2000. Anyone have
any experience with it.
Thanks,
Paul

Does anyone have any info on the DW8000? I figured this was the
place for it.
I'm new in this file. I'll try not to violate any file "protocol".
(I did a dir/title and all that stuff).
Thanks.

1729.6 | I love the M1 keyboard feel. | GIAMEM::LAFLAMME | | Fri Jun 16 1989 17:27 | 8 |
| Yeah, where's all the info on the DW8000? I remember hearing
one of these about last X-mas, and it had the nicest electric organ
I'd ever heard (I'D). Especially, is the keyboard like the M1 and
does it have the familiar LFO/pitch joystick (I love those!)?
Somebody who has one, speak up.

I believe it's got a joystick.Up and down for pitch bend, sideways
for modulation. I've seen a few EX's going from $400 to $ 550 used.
I'll get one someday. Good resonance.

1729.8 | no patch names on display | MARVIN::MACHIN | | Mon Jun 19 1989 05:58 | 9 |
| I had one for a month, but I got the dealer to take it back in favour
of a DX7. It did have great tonewheel organ sounds, and useful
simulated
delay. It does have the bend/mod jostick.
But cassette backup, and -- at least the one I hade -- some
digital grunge problems (see notes on aliasing).

1729.9 | Looks like I'll be able to fill in the blanks in this note... | 4TRACK::LAQUERRE | | Tue Jan 30 1990 13:24 | 43 |

Well, looks like I'll be getting a DW8000 later this week. Last Saturday, I
reached the point and realized that I couldn't go on without a keyboard.
My latest recordings without keyboard fills and organ patches were coming out
very lacking and I was getting very frustrated. So I boxed up my broken
CZ1000 and was about to send it out to an expensive repair center.
Just before I got in the car, I just happened to mention to my
fiscally-responsible wife that it may cost me about the same to replace
the CZ with a new one--especially if some place like Sam Ash has some
still in stock.
Taking into account my recent frustration in the home studio, Sheryl agreed.
I called Sam Ash and they had no more CZs in stock, BUT for a mere $399 a
guy named Ed told me he could send me a Korg DW8000. I asked a few questions,
got off the phone and realized that Sheryl was agreeing that it would better
to buy a new keyboard for a couple a' hundred more than risk getting the
CZ fixed for an estimated $150 ($65 an hour for two hours, plus parts).
I logged on that afternoon to scan the COMMUSIC conference and found this
note and a couple of other scattered references to the DW8000; I checked my
Keyboard mags and realized that there seems to be plenty of people out there
with DW8000s and EX-8000s (the rackmount). And, before Sheryl had a chance
to change from her rather generous mood, I bought the sucker.
Now, I'm waiting anxiously, hoping I didn't buy a dog. But all indications
are that:
A. Its going to be a major step up from my CZ
B. It's new (with warrantee, etc)
C. There's plenty of sounds available through mail order (although
they are on cassette); one of my old Keyboard magazines even
has a couple of DW8000 patches.
D. I can have it this week!
Any comments on my madness? As soon as I get it I'll enter a review so
anyone else out there looking for an inexpensive MIDI board (uh, KEYboard)
will have a better idea what the DW8000 can do.

Although I am not intimately familiar with all of your music, I
was mightily impressed with your COMMUSIC III submissions. As a
keyboard junkie myself, I can only imagine your efforts in the future
will be even better.

1729.11 | Nice Synth! | NRPUR::DEATON | In tents | Tue Jan 30 1990 14:10 | 9 |
| RE < Note 1729.9 by 4TRACK::LAQUERRE >
The only thing you're going to lack with the DW8000 is multi-timbrality.
(Did you use the CZ as a multi-timbral instrument?) Other than that, I'm sure
you'll be happy with it. It is a nice cross between digital and analog
synthesis. My first synth was its kid brother, the DW6000.

1729.12 | | 4TRACK::LAQUERRE | | Tue Jan 30 1990 14:42 | 22 |

Hi Dan:
Okay. Not up on my synth terminology--sorry. Multi-timbral. Is that:
1 The ability to layer patches to make one tone? (The CZ could layer
two patches, but only while in solo/mono mode.) I used this
capability of the CZ once in a while for synth leads, but not
all that often.
2 The ability to play two or more patches independently? (The CZ
could play up to four different mono voices independantly, but
only when accessed through MIDI).
I never used this capability of the CZ because I'm not using MIDI
yet. Without MIDI, the CZ only allowed one patch at a time except
when you're in the mono mode described above. And of course each
patch when played on the keyboard was either 4-note polyphonic
or 8-note polyphonic, depending on the patch.

1729.13 | both | NRPUR::DEATON | In tents | Tue Jan 30 1990 15:14 | 28 |
| RE < Note 1729.12 by 4TRACK::LAQUERRE >
Actually, I mean both. The DW8000 can only play one tone at a time. Although
it has two oscillators per voice, they share the same filter and amp. So you
could, conceivably get two kinds of basic sounds at once (using different
waveforms for each oscillator, but they would both go through the same filter
and envelope settings. On the CZ, you could take two entirely different sounds,
each with their own envelope and brightness characteristics, and layer them
(as you described).
So this could be good or bad for you, depending on the kind of sounds
you like to get. If you are used to layering a bright percussive tone with
something that uses a longer attack, you will be out of luck.
That is not to say you will be dissapointed with the DW. On the
contrary, I definately think you're taking a big step up in sound quality. Not
only that, but you are also getting a built-in programmable digital delay to
boot! But you will have to re-adjust to the kinds of things you can do with
it.
So, to sum up, you're gaining in quality, but losing in functionality
(which, based on your explanation, isn't really a loss to you). You're gaining
in getting a very nice sounding instrument, but you're no longer going to have
the ability to play different patches simultaneously (either by layering or by
using four independent voices via midi).

1729.14 | oh, and... | NRPUR::DEATON | In tents | Tue Jan 30 1990 15:20 | 14 |
| I just checked my literature on the DW8000. Not only are you getting a
ddl, but you are also gaining the following features:
Velocity/Aftertouch Sensitivity
Arpeggiator (which can be clocked from a drum machine/sequencer)
Autobend (a programmable feature that sets the oscillators to
automatically bend up from a lower frequency each time a
voice is triggered - this is programmable on a per-patch
basis)
An even better synth than I remembered!

1729.15 | Thanks Dan! | 4TRACK::LAQUERRE | | Tue Jan 30 1990 15:42 | 16 |

Thanks for typing in the list of features. It's nice to see what I heard from
the Sam Ash salesman confirmed. When he said it was a Velocity-sensitive
keyboard and 61-keys--that's really what sold me. I also noticed in one of the
patch descriptions in Keyboard that it had settings for Aftertouch.
I recently purchased a MIDIverb II, which drastically improved the sound of
my CZ, so I'm interested to see how the *built-in* digital delay will sound
in the DW8000.
As for the price, I took a ride down to Daddy's today and as I expected, they
had some used synths for that price range, but nothing new. After my recent
problems with the CZ, I'm looking forward to having a new machine.

Glad you liked my COMMUSIC III submissions. I finally did submit a couple of
songs to the latest COMMUSIC tape--so you'll soon be able to hear for yourself
whether I'm improving--or not improving!
