    Just got this software (current rev 1.3c) Friday afternoon, so opinions
    are subject to change.

    Details follow:

    The program handles SYSEX patch dumps on many, many different types of
    synths.  Among those supported: Casio, Ensoniq, Roland, Yamaha, etc.
    The keyboard ad shows most of the options.  Enhancements and support
    for additional synths are added at 3 month intervals.  Machines with
    different types of patch data (eg, Y-word DX, sound dumps and
    performance dumps) have different types of data stored and retrieved
    seperately. 

    The program "understands" the format of each supported synth's SYSEX
    dumps, allowing you to arrange and catalog patches easily.  Banks
    (dumps) have names and an additional 20 character field for a bank
    description.  Banks are stored in a special format according to synth
    type - in other words, the stored bank is not a true SYSEX dump, so
    Omni-Banker is required to get these things back out to a synth. 

    Full GEM interface, allowing patch dragging between 2 on-screen banks
    (each bank can hold up to 128 patches).  Per bank scrolling supported,
    as well as a zoom mode that displays an entire bank at once. The
    program allows naming of patches for synths with unnamed patches (eg
    OB-8, Jupiter).  Patches may be auditioned from the computer (via a
    built-in short "little ditty", or with the mouse (click & hold to
    sustain a note, drag up to increase velocity, drag right to increase
    MIDI note number).  This is a very nice touch. 

    Works either as a standalone program or as a desk accessory (requires
    110Kb).  This is kinda big, but could be bigger (2 16K patch buffers
    allocated now, could be raised to 32K).  There is some talk about
    making the standalone program able to handle sequencer and sample
    dumps.  The DA would not be able to do this due to the large amounts of
    memory required (256K).  They are very receptive to use input on
    how to improve the program.

    Program is written in Pascal.  I could go on and on, but will stop
    here.  Any questions are welcome.  I highly recommend the program.

	How extensively have you tested the DA verion? Does it work with your sequencer? Even though redundant, have you tried it with my program? Getting a DA to work with an arbitrary program is impossible, but I'm just wondering if they handle all the significant cases. For example, my sequencer seems to take characters from the MIDI input buffer if they are available when it receives a timer interrupt. This is a non-obvious case. How do you know that it was written in Pascal? Steph

	RE: .1 The DA works great. It works with both the sequencer AND BULKDUMP with nary a problem. The release notes said something about the program having to jump thru hoops to get access to the MIDI port since there are software prodcuts that are "improperly allocating the MIDI port" - i.e., in non-shared mode. Not being an ST hacker, I can't begin to explain what that means. Release notes also stated something about Pascal routines, so I'm assuming. -b
