1629.0. "Roland GP8 Guitar Effects (FX) Processor" by TOOK::DDS_SEC (Snugglebunnies! Snu--) Thu Aug 18 1988 16:18

Yo, db or one of you other guys who also play guitar, what's the name
(and specs, if possible? review?) of that Roland or was it maybe Y-word
guitar digital effects processor in a rack mount? I know everything is put
into presets, and I think it has a dial (therefore: Roland). Help?

Huh? There are LOTS of rack mount FX, not necessarily dedicated to
    guitar. For example:

	MIDIverb II DigiTech DSP-128
	Roland DEP-5 ART Multiverb
	ART PROverb Roland SRV-2000

	 indicates multiple simultaneous effects

Dir /title=EFFECT or =FX or =any of the above should turn up something.

Not true. Roland makes this excellent guitar effects box. Our
guitarist has one, but unfortunately I can't remember the model
number. (GSP-??? or something like that).

It has about 6 classic electric guitar effects daisy chained together
internally (delay, stereo chorus, distortion and a few others) and
a "patch" describes the routings and settings between all the effects
    in the unit.

Patches can be called up via midi (great for use with sequenced
music) or via a foot controller.

The unit replaces all those stomp boxes that guitarists have to
deal with, and it really makes any halfway decent guitar sound awesome.

I remember hearing that it cost around $900, but I could be way
off base. Not being a guitar player I wasn't listening that close.

1629.3But I already did that...TOOK::DDS_SECI keep Roland down the hillThu Aug 18 1988 17:5615
Yeah, from what I've searched for (yes I did try on my own before
asking a stupid question) the DEP-5 *might* be the box I saw. Of course it
could be used for other things, I just meant that with distortion and
overdrive it would be particularly useful for guitar. I don't know too many
groups that run their mics through a "Mega Deth" guitar patch. But seriously,
I remember it had around ten effects, let's see if I can remember them:
reverb, compression, delay, chorus, flange, distortion, overdrive...Ok, maybe
seven. But each were independently linked and had adjustable values. But
from what I heard about the DEP-5's display, I don't think it's the same box
I saw. This one was 2x20 LCD (non-lit, ugh), and presets were named. I don't
know if it had MIDI sysex patch stuff, 'cause only a Steinberger was plugged
into it. But any ideas or leads (was it the DEP-5? or RE: .2 a GRP-???)
would be greatly appreciated.

1629.5Roland GP-8 ??WARMTH::KAYDIf music be the love of food...Fri Aug 19 1988 05:0520
For information's sake, the guitar conference is CVG::GUITAR. You
may find some info there, but there's quite a lot to wade through !

The other eligible boxes that I know of are the Roland GP-8 (this
may be the one that .2 refers to), which I don't know too much about
this, but I think it fits the description.

The only other box I can think of immediately is the new Yamaha
    rack-mount, which is effectively a REX-50 in a 'proper' 19" box. This
is a multi-effects unit designed for guitar (e.g. it has digital
    distortion).

Sorry I don't have more info, but maybe you'd like to check these
two out (and let us know the answer !!)

    Cheers,

    Derek.

I have one of the new Yamaha units at home. It is an SPX50D and
so far it seems to be quite good. It certainly does all the guitar
sounds that I want. So far....

What's the difference between an RX50D and an RX50 (you complained
bitterly about the RX50 distortion, if I recall).

    re,-1 and 2.

The "SPX" 50D is a rack mount along the lines of the SPX90. It does
however add distortions as required but not as digitally as the
old REX which was pretty tinny sounding. I havn't bought it yet
    but might well do so.

No it won't do multiple effects but does add distortion in calibrated
amounts to the other effects and does have a couple of multi-effects
    I think it's Reverb + DIST + Chorus.

I have for some time been trying to mimic the guitar sound the Dave
Dreher showed me in his studio based on a Gallen Kreuger and a DDL.
This gets pretty close. I think.

The unit the base note is asking about is the Roland GP-8. I just
bought one today. 8-) 8-) I can't *wait* to get home and use it.

For the few of us guitarists who read this conference, it's the
greatest thing to come along since the whammy bar! Now I can program
the sounds I want for each song for the entire night, and use my MIDI
foot controller to access the next sound. There's an A/B bank if you
want to switch to a second sound.

You can run multiple effects at the same time. You can get an optional
expression controller (to control volume or amount of effect).

It's fully programmable. The factory preset sounds are *phenomenal*.

It's expensive, but worth it.

I paid $1100 for GP-8, MIDI foot controller, expression controller,
and 3-space rackmount case. I bought it at Wurly's in Boston.

I'll post a review of the product once I really learn it.

1629.12GP-16 manual wantedDREGS::BLICKSTEINJust say /NOOPTMon Sep 09 1991 11:266
I just sold my GP-8 and got a GP-16 (brand new with a foot controller
    for $600 - $500 less than my GP-8 cost!!!).

But my GP-16 came without a manual. Are there any GP-16 owners
out there kind enough to photocopy the manual for me (or send it
to me and I'll photocopy it)?
1629.13The dealer should be able to get you a manualCUPMK::DUBEDan Dube 264-0506Mon Sep 09 1991 13:1010
Dave,

First of all, congratulations! (I'm jealous, but I'll stick with my
GP-8 for now.)

Secondly, where did you buy it? I had this problem when I bought my
MC500 MKII at Wurly's. They were really nice, and ordered me a new
manual at no cost. I had it within a few days.

1629.14The dealer is willing to but...DREGS::BLICKSTEINJust say /NOOPTMon Sep 09 1991 14:4122
I got it at Daddy's Junky Music store during their "Garage Sale" on
    Saturday..

It was brand new, but the papers were missing and it was sold "as is".
Daddy's has offered to order me a manual but I would have to pay for
it. At the price I paid for the GP-16 and the foot controller I
have absolutely no beef with that.

Daddy's "garage sales" used to be nothing but junk - like ancient stuff
that no one would want anymore at ho-hum prices. But the last bunch
have been, IMHO, truly incredible. Better than ANYTHING I have seen
    ANYWHERE.

Most incredible price I saw: BRAND NEW ENSONIQ VFX-SD for $999!!!!

Boyz, those babies normally can't be had for anything even close to
$1500. (I paid $1700 for mine and several MO stores said "we can't
    beat that price.").

I can always get the manual from Daddy's if I need to, but that might
take awhile and I'd rather try to get a copy of someone else's. I
don't recall anyone in here mentioning having a GP-16 though.
1629.15Or Roland in LA will send you oneNUTELA::CHADChad, ZKO Computer ResourcesThu Sep 12 1991 02:3913

	Dave,

Roland will direct mail you one from LA for about $15. I
	ordered a U20 manual when I found a U20 sans manual at
Building 19. It ended up not costing a penny for the
manual because the first time I ordered it the guy mailroom
guy never sent it so I called again after a few weeks
and the guy sent one pronto and my VISA was never charged.
