1619.0. "Buying a Roland D50 - Go New or Used?" by TOOK::DDS_SEC (Maybe an SQ-80. I got 12...) Mon Aug 15 1988 14:15

Ok guys, I have mentioned this in some of my notes of the past (that
sounds like a title; should I capitalize it?), but now I'd like some serious,
down and dirty opinions (reviews???) of my options on new & used equipment.

I have finally decided that what I want for live performance playing
is a D-50. I said `ta heck with the D-20's seq.' because I want to develop
MY playing abilities, not the computer's. Anyway, here's the scrub: I can
get a new, shiny polished D-50 for $1400 plus shipping (I was told by the guy
about $5-6 to Mass.) which includes 3 mo. parts and labor and 1 yr. crap out
warranty. Or I can get a used D-50, no assurance, a little buffed, for $1250
or so. I've actually seen them a little cheaper, too. So what do YOU all
think, 'cause I need lots of viewpoints. Thanks!

I agree with Edd; for $150 bucks I would go for the new one. If
the unthinkable happens you've got some recourse (even with M/O).
Also, you get a full doc set.

A dissenting digression, for what it's worth ...

I spent the last few days in Nashville at a pretty big gig. Used a
TX7/ESQ-M combination. Played right alongside 2 D-50s. And everyone
liked my sound BETTER than the D-50s' sound.

This is not a brag - I just think you might be better able to spend
    your $1400.

1619.5Variety is the Spice of Life, and All That...DRUMS::FEHSKENSTue Aug 16 1988 14:039
re .4 - It really all depends on how they've been programmed. A
stock D-50 is not terribly interesting, soundwise.

But it *will* generally be the case that two different synths together
will sound better than two of the same synth together, regardless
    of the specific synths involved.

1619.6Let's try again.DYO780::SCHAFERBrad ... DTN 433-2408Tue Aug 16 1988 14:0911
    I guess I didn't make myself clear.

When the comments were made, I was only using the TX. The ESQs were on
a different channel. Of course, when I added the ESQs, the sound
became even more ... um, robust.

I'm not knocking the D-50 - it's a nice piece of gear. I'm just trying
to ensure that all alternatives are considered. From the "getta cheap
Atari" note, it appears that this is not the case.

Nah, Brad, let's argue! Anybody who doesn't have the same equipment
I do is obviously a yoyo brain and should not be allowed to note in
this conference. After all, I'm the only one with a legitimate
opinion, and besides, my opinions aren't opinions, they're the truth.
Now that I've made myself clear, nothing more need be said, right?

Hey, I thought we were gonna leave our cats outta this?!

Actually, if my cat slept on the S-550, I would quite likely find
fried cat remains on it in the morning. Fortunately, I have mine
rack-mounted and thus the cat doesn't have this option.

Most of my Roland rack mount stuff doubles as space heaters in the
    winter.

I take it then that the rack-mounted cat is not bolted in directly above
the S-550.

I dunno. Haven't "racked" him yet although I've often been tempted.

And he's not MIDI'd either. In fact, not having a keyboard nor
a MIDI interface, I'm not really sure what you're suppose to use

Does anyone out there have an Octave-Plateau CAT/KITTEN/or CAT-SRM
    non-midi synth (circa 1979 approx)?
Anyone want to sell one? my cat SRM bit the dust and
I really want to get another. If you have one,
even if you dont want to sell, lets talk about it.
It think a cat-srm with a PAIA or JLCooper midi-cv
is a great fat analog (0% digital) lead synth for a midi rig.

I've been inside the unit and its a rats nest.
the manufacturer doesnt have a parts placement spec,
and translating schematic to an actual part is tough,
especially since there are replacement parts on the board
    already with non-matched numbers. (RCA# != TI#)
I dont think anyone would fix it for under for 100
so, Im just planning to buy a used one which usually
runs for around 100 anyway. Thanks for asking though.
