1600.0. "Yamaha MIDI Merge Device" by NCVAX1::ALLEN () Thu Aug 04 1988 18:18

    	Do any of you have experience withthe Yamaha YMM-1, MIDI merge
    box? There are two past notes which discuss the problem of merging
    info from two MIDI devices. From reading them, it would seem that
    this gizmo might be the best way to do this, given I don't want
    to hassle with building something. (And all I want to do is merge
    the two sources; no filters, discombobbulators, etc. please).

    	Also the local pirates ...er I mean music dealers want from
    $125 to $150 for one. Is this a decent price? Is there somewhere
    back east that might be better to call (M/O)?

    thanx,
    Bill

    I have one of these (at least I think that it's the same model - I
    thought that mine was a YMM-2, but, alas, with all of these meaningless
    initials, I can't seem to keep track anymore). I use it like this:
    (partial configuration)

    Electronic Drums
	TR-505 ---------> In # 1
				      Sequencer		Synth Magic
			Merge out -----> MMT-8 ----------> MT-32
     2.8" DISK DRIVE
         Yamaha ??------> In # 2

    This effectively allows either the TR-505 or the MMT-8 to drive
    my MT-32 & other random MIDI connections. Either the disk drive
    or the TR-505 can be in charge. I'll mention that you have to select
    which clock that you want to control things (since the digital signal
    eventually snakes it's way back to the TR-505, I don't want the
    TR-505's clock to be set when the clock in the sequencer is controlling
    things (actually the sequencer can be started & stopped from the
    TR-505's clock - but, this often surprizes me with variations on the
    arrangement that I didn't intend). All in all, it does a good job, but,
    I wish it was 4 in, one out. I Paid $75.00 (used) for mine. I buy
    used when ever possible, since it's all most always pretty new when
    it was put up for sale, but someone bought something else to replace
    it, shortly after buying it.

    I also have one of these. It works well. I.E. it does the job.

    The reason I have it is as follows.

    I have one st1040, one Kx88,one Qx5 all which can be used to originate
    midi-info. The KX88 has a midi-input which it merges with data
    generated at the keyboard so I have.

    	The rest -> ST ->  KX88 -> Qx5 -> the rest.

    This had worked fine until I started using the ST for Sample editing
    (a sysex sample dump just swamped the KX88 and the lights went dim
    and came up with all sorts of errors.)

    So I tried the akai me30p which has midi-merge plus patching. This
    couldn't handle the data either although it worked well as a patcher.

    So my local music shop gave me (yes gave as in no money) the YMM-2.
    (I can only assume the made the profit from me elsewhere or more
    likely in the future) My system now looks like.

   The REST-> ST ->
                   YMM2-> the rest
      KX88->QX5->

    The only problem with this is that I have turn the clock off the
    QX5 when sending sample dumps back down to the AKAI.

1600.3Looking for a used one...NCVAX1::ALLENFri Aug 12 1988 16:449
    Thanks for the help. I will try to get one used (or free) if I
    can. In the meantime, I will just have to program the drum parts
    on Channel 16 or whatever. Hey, that's what I bought full MIDI
    implementations for, right?

    Clusters,

    I just bought one of these YMM2's from Caruso Music (see Dealer
    listing for Phone#) for $118.50 including shipping.This is with
    DECMS discount. I don't need an MX-8 and would rather put the extra
    $200 towards another SGU.
