1597.0. "glib - A Generic LiBrarian and editor for synths" by DSSDEV::SURTEES (Bob Surtees) Thu Aug 04 1988 10:55

    I just received from the usenet world the sources for glib (one
    syllable). This is a Generic LiBrarian and editor for synths.

    Originally written by Tim Thompson, including the basic structure
    and support for the TX81Z (patches and performance), DX10, and DEP5.
    Macintosh and DW8000 support by Steve Falco.

    Intro
    -----
    glib is a text-screen-oriented librarian AND editor. It is structured
    in an attempt to make it easy to add support for new synthesizers.

    Included is at least 1 bank of voices for each synth type that glib
    supports in uuencode format. It will run on UNIX (it uses curses),
    although most UNIX machines don't have MIDI I/O, but it will give
    you a feel for what the program does.
    ------
    I haven't done anything with this as I am a complete novice when
    it comes to sythesizers (I just recently aquired an ESQ1), but included
    this note on the assumption that someone out there may know all
    about it and find it usefull.

    All of the files can be found in skanda::/usr/users/ras/glib on
    Ultrix and DSSDEV::USERG$:[SURTEES.GLIB] on VMS (some of the file
    names on VMS have been changed due to VMS file naming restrictions).

    Have fun, Bob Surtees

1597.1ESQuizit - Unix not required.DYO780::SCHAFERBrad ... DTN 433-2408Thu Aug 04 1988 11:156
    There's a very good PD librarian available for the ST called ESQuizit.
    Non-GEM interface, but very fast and (as far as I can tell) bug-free.

    Runs on the Atari ST.

1597.2MSDOS-PC version does not workMARVIN::SCOTTBArry A. ScottWed Aug 10 1988 19:3515
	I have been playing with the MSDOS verison of the GLIB
	code. Basically it does not work. I suspect from
	reading that its not been debugged. There a number of
	simple logic errors in the source that I fixed. But
	without a MPU-401 programming reference spec I cannot
	figure out why it does not work.

	I am   using  a  10MHz  AT  clone  with  Dr.   T  MPU-401
	interface. (Its got Roland chips all over the PCB).

	If anyone has a MPU-401 spec I can get a copy of or can
	tell me where to get one I would be very grateful.
	Roland U.K. believe that teh MPU-401 is a secret!!!

1597.3Glib on PCMARVIN::SCOTTBArry A. ScottMon Aug 22 1988 11:3913
	Having found out a little useful info on the MPU-401 I
	have finally go Glib going on the PC. I can now create
	my own Tx81Z sounds patches.

	If anybody else has been playing with Glib you might find
	the bug fixes useful. Its not just the PC code that was
	broken, the TX81Z voice editing had not been tested. A
	wee buglet was changing the order of the operators in the
	SysEx messages...

	Still its working fine now.

1597.4generic isn't universalLOLITA::DIORIOTue Sep 13 1988 12:059

    I really wonder sometimes how useful these generic librarian/editors
    are. I have a Chroma Polaris, and would love to get some software
    like this to work with it, but apparently it has a somewhat oddball
    MIDI implementation which precludes it from working with many so
    called "generic" librarian/editors. Does anybody know if the software
    mentioned here would work with a Chroma Polaris??

    re-.4 Prolib works with the Polaris. Incidentally if you are using
    an Apple II+ I have a home written librarian for the Chroma that
    you are welcome to.

1597.6Thanks for the info Ken!LOLITA::DIORIOWed Sep 14 1988 12:497

    Thanks very much for the offer, Ken. The bad news is I'm not using
    an Apple. Currently, I'm using an IBM clone. I'll have to investigate
    Prolib further. Do you know who makes it, and if it's available
    for IBMs and compatibles?

	GLIB a Generic LIBrarian.

	Well not really, its a common frontend with custom code
	for each synth. So if you are happy to write code for
	GLIB its not a bad starting point.

	I have a set of files for the PC that work that are
	online. Let me know if you are interested. (Note the
	orginal files in .0 have bugs in them...).

	I have   TX81Z  working,  Elka  MK55  working,  and  D110
	prototyped.
