1575.0. "Wendel Jr. 'drum replacement' SGU" by SALSA::MOELLER (DECblocks Product Support) Thu Jul 28 1988 13:54

    Did anyone check out the two-page ad in the most recent (July?)
    issue of EM on the Wendel Jr. ?? I have read a couple of articles
    on this unit in the past.. it was developed by a tech that worked
    with Steely Dan.. they were tired of the inconsistency of drum sounds
    they were getting from album to album and cut to cut.

    It's featured prominently on one of my favorite Steely Dan pieces
    'Hey Nineteen'.. perhaps I relate to the lyric "..she thinks I'm
    crazy but I'm just growing old"..

    But the Wendel Jr. is a fascinating piece of hardware.. it is NOT
    a 'drum machine' in that it has no pattern memory, and it is NOT
    triggered via MIDI.. instead it uses a "very fast" audio triggering
    circuit.. it's marketed as a 'drum replacement' unit.

    At over $1000, it was just a curiosity.. but now it's come down..
    For $600, I'm VERY interested ! Any comments from the community?

1575.1MIDI too slow?HPSRAD::NORCROSSThu Jul 28 1988 13:5910

Yeah, is MIDI really that slow? I've never noticed any slowness,
       but I'm just a home midiot. Do the professionals experience
      significant delays in the MIDI drum trigger path?

1575.2$600 still aint cheap...LOLITA::DIORIOThu Jul 28 1988 14:005
    Yeah I saw the ad too and it sounded interesting, but why is it
    not controllable via MIDI? Is there any benefit to the audio triggering
    method given the (IMO major) disadvantages of no MIDI control?

    re no MIDI control.. I wish it were there, too, but their rationale
    was that as this is meant to be a real-time drum sound replacement
    unit, ANY delay was not acceptable.. if I remember it'll take audio
    inputs, line or mic, or an 'intermittent trigger' switch.

    Think of it as Rx for your RX !! (sorry)
1575.4Want One, But...DRUMS::FEHSKENSThu Jul 28 1988 14:0315
    Yeah, I want one.

    I saw the ad too. I wish I could hear one before I lay out the
    cash. I read a review some time ago, probably in Music Sound Output,
    and it sounds like the closest thing to my fantasy LENcymbal box.

    The lack of MIDI is a minor annoyance, especially since "MIDI to
    pad" convertors are not exactly a hot item these days.

    I don't recall if it supports dynamics (it's virtually useless if
    it doesn't), and I'm not aware of a box that converts MIDI note
    ons with velocity to the corresponding pulse amplitude.

1575.5No problem- if you got $CTHULU::YERAZUNISTime is important; try to answer as quickly as possible.Thu Jul 28 1988 14:167
    If you manage to latch onto an Xpander for cheap, it's trivial to
    program the Xpander to be a MIDI to pad converter, with velocity,
    pressure, wheel sense, whatever.

1575.6how many samples?HPSRAD::NORCROSSThu Jul 28 1988 14:204
I don't have the ad in front of me, but didn't it only support like two
samples at a time (ie, kick and snare cartridge)?

1575.7Long SamplesDRUMS::FEHSKENSThu Jul 28 1988 14:3410
    re .6 - yes, but they're really big samples. Also, I believe there
    may be two samples per cartridge - e.g., the snare has left and
    right hand strikes. The unit has some neat features, e.g., you
    can set it up so if a second hit comes in close enough to the first,
    it plays the second sample instead. Thus, you'd alternate the snare
    samples on fills, but use the same sample for every backbeat. Gives
    a more realistic effect.
