1462.0. "What Synthesizer field job would you like?" by PLDVAX::JANZEN (Tom LMO2/O23 296-5421) Wed Jun 15 1988 13:22

    If you were to have an opportunity to work in the electronic
    synthesizer field, what would you like to do?
    Would you like to answer the 1-800 phone at Sam Ash?
    Would you like to be a salesperson at Wurlitzer?
    Would you like to sample orchestral instruments into Commodore
    Amiga IFF format for ECT Sampleware?
    (the answered the phone "mimetics").
    Would you like to edit the Computer Music Journal or write
    articles for Electronic Musician?
    Would you like to design the custom chips and design with
    standard chips to make effects boxes and synths and special
    tape recorders?
    Would you like to write microcomputer MIDI software?
    Would you like to do musical DSP research?
    Would you like to be a market strategist for Yamaha?
    Would you move to Japan? (maybe not necessary for a marketeer for
    US)
    How much % cut in pay would you take to get this new job?
    Tom

1462.1Edd Cote used 7 of these on the Victory tour...JAWS::COTELook!! Eeet eees BASSOON!Wed Jun 15 1988 13:263
    I'd design the rigs for major acts, do the programming, etc...

    I'd run the shop where Tom buys enough gear to make him
    indistinguishable from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

    Richard.
1462.3But my salary allows me to buy this stuffPAULJ::HARRIMANHell's only error message: 'Eh?'Wed Jun 15 1988 13:4112

    I'd like to be one of those people who designs factory patches.
    I'm sure I could do as good a job as those who do it now... ;^)

    Cut in pay? Are you kidding? Why do I work for DEC?

    Failing that, I'd like to design software (sequencer or otherwise)
    for synthesizers and samplers. If I didn't have a full-time programming
    job now, I'd probably be doing that (of course, the pesky pay-scale
    comes in again)

1462.4Stupid in a Funny way or Funny in a Stupid way...DRFIX::PICKETTDavid - Who has the Blue food?Thu Jun 16 1988 09:138
    I'd like to work support for Roland. That way I could be the one
    telling Len, "Gee, we've never tried that", or, "Sorry, THAT guy
    is out right now".

    In reality? I'd like to build gate arrays for Kurzweil, Yamaha or
    Roland.

    keyboard out. :^)

1462.6Crashbangboom Inc.HPSTEK::RHODESThu Jun 16 1988 09:555
I'd like to run a company that builds a realistic and affordable sampler
that has special features for drum sounds. Hey Len, wanna be president?

Todd.

1462.7Playing your DSPCTHULU::YERAZUNISThe computer did it by itself!Thu Jun 16 1988 10:378
    I'd like to do a general-purpose computer that you could program
    in a high-level language, and that was fast enough that it could
    analyze/sample/synthesize in real time.

    Something like the PPG Realizer, but with user-generable models,
    and able to DSP at the same time it plays.

1462.8I'll name this patch 'Niki Lauda'SRFSUP::MORRISThe best laid plans never get laidThu Jun 16 1988 11:0812
    I'd like to be the guy that gets handed a prototype, and is then
    told:

    	"Well, here it is, and here are all of the parameters and what
    they do, and what the range of values are. We need 64 *hot* presets
    in a week. Go for it."

    BTW, I marketed (in the back of keyboard magazine) patches that
    I had written for the Akai AX-80. $10 for 32 patches. I netted
    about $450.

1462.9UI designerDSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSONEirikur, CDA Product ManagerThu Jun 16 1988 12:5216
    I'd like to design good user interfaces for powerful systems like
    the K5 and resynthesis machines. I tend to hate most existing UI's--
    the numeric keypad and small display business is so indirect.

    I really want to see a direct manipulation scheme, something like
    a Roland D50 programmer module, but with good human factors. I
    would also like to design a machine with no "cyber-crud" in the
    UI, something that had only musical terms on the controls. I envision
    a keyboard with controls only labeled Brightness, Thickness, etc.
    I'd need to develop a conceptual model to represent synthesis
    parameters in such a system, but I think it would be worthwhile.
    I envision devices like this having real physical knobs, or at least
    a large touch-plate display with visual feedback.

1462.10Actually, I'd rather just perform. 8-)DYO780::SCHAFERBrad - DTN 433-2408Thu Jun 16 1988 13:3128
    I'd like to own/run/get_run_by a *decent* HONEST music store in which
    the focus was keyboard equipment.

    The store would have at least 3 other customer interface types, besides
    me. NO SALESMEN HERE! Job requirements would include at LEAST 4 hours
    per week becoming an expert at the keyboard of your choice, mandatory 8
    hours play time during the first week of a new machine. All C/I types
    would be at the same technical level or above as, say, most members of
    the conference.

    At least one of each major MIDI computer (MAC, ST, Amiga) and several
    PC clones w/ various interfaces would be on hand, as well as shelf
    copies of all the latest/greatest software. Large PD & private patch
    libraries for all major synths would be provided via an on-line
    bulletin board (running on a VAX, naturally).

    A rubber room would be provided for all pre/post adolescenet males who
    insist on playing Eruption at high volume levels - they would be locked
    in this room and subjected to repeated Orchestra Hits until they
    repented.  &*}

    Actually, I'd rather design and code a music workstation based on a VAX
    workstation, but I think most musicians need better support people who
    really understand the *current* equipment. The access to discussions
    and info posted in this conference are something that most musicians
    sorely lack.

1462.11Music Workstation EngineerDREGS::BLICKSTEINYo!Thu Jun 16 1988 14:2516
    I think I'd like to be the "musician's musician" that all these
    companies are constantly begging to do endorsements.

    However, as that seems about as likely as me becoming Digital's
    next president...

    I certainly would like to work on *MY* idea of a "Music Workstation".
    This is the one where you buy floppies with labels like "Harmonizer",
    "Reverb", "ESQ-1", "Sampler", "Sequencer", "Transcriber", "Librarian",
    etc.

    However, I really enjoy the work I'm doing here at DEC (and they pay me
    for it too!) so this is merely what I'd do if I weren't working for
    DEC.

    re .4 - Thanks, Dave, I needed that. Besides, I like calling Roland,
    the woman who answers their phone sounds delightful.

    re .6 - No thanks, Todd, I'd rather help design the thing.

1462.13Hardware is the thing.PANGLS::BAILEYConstants aren't, variables don'tThu Jun 16 1988 17:229
    I'd like to design hardware:

       1) Cleaner analog circuitry for these low-cost synths.
       2) Controllers:
         a) A full (organ) sized pedal board.
         b) Something totally new. More expressive than a keyboard,
            hopefully.
