1440.0. "I dare you to patch this!" by CTHULU::YERAZUNIS (I won! I won!) Wed Jun 08 1988 23:10

    It's time we challenged ourselves to building "new and interesting
    sounds".

    This note is a list of challenging sounds to program, and the solutions
    of how to program that sound.

    How we do it: I will post a challenge sound. People can try to
    program it (use whatever synth or layer you want). When you "get"
    the sound, have it checked by someone else (your spouse, your friend,
    your cat, etc.) to confirm that it's a "reasonable approximation"
    of the challenge sound.

    When your checker agrees "yes, that's definitely the sound of a
    <mumble>.", post your patch here.

    If yours is the *first* solution patch posted, then YOU post a
    NEW challenge sound to create.

1440.2!AKOV88::EATONDNo, no, no... 47!!Thu Jun 09 1988 10:029
	Is this for real? The base note (and its intended challenge) were
entered at 8-JUN-1988 22:10, and the first 'entry' is rec'd at 08:13 the next
day. And not only was it programmed, but 'Confirmed last night by 7 people...'

	Don't you folks have anything else to attend to besides writing weird
patches?! And I thought _I_ was a dedicated synthesist!

1440.3Your turn to challenge, EddCTHULU::YERAZUNISCaution: Contains subliminal suggestionsThu Jun 09 1988 11:425
    Yes, this is for real.

    Edd, it's your serve. Make us work a bit. :-)

1440.4Your call Bill....JAWS::COTEAre you buying this at all??Thu Jun 09 1988 11:5217
    Sorry, Bill, I can't in good faith take up the flag. A close inspection
    of my patch would reveal that it produced absolutely *NOTHING*.
    Nada. Silence.

    All the carrier's levels have been set to 0 making the value of any
    other parameter moot.

    Unless I got lucky and a Magic Marker makes no sound on dry ice,
    I gotta keep this challenge running. I didn't realize you were
    serious.

    But if I did win, I'd like someone to program the sound of 2 hits
    of Alka Seltzer hitting the water and fizzing....

RE < Note 1440.4 by JAWS::COTE "Are you buying this at all??" >

	I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT! (although, I should have taken a moment to
review the patch itself...)

	Here's a thought. Given the thought that people seem to be programming
less and less, and relying more on factory patches (hey, a thought for a new
note! 8^), what if we started to promote a move back to patch programming by
having another kind of COMMUSIC tape - a patch demo collection! We could all
submit our proudest patches and review each others' work.

	It's a thought...

1440.6Wouldn't The Marker Squeak Just a Little/DRUMS::FEHSKENSThu Jun 09 1988 12:147
    Is it ok to use some keyboard technique? E.g., a split with the
    the "plop" on one half of the keyboard and the "fizz" on the other?
    Doing a plop and fizz on the Super Jupiter shouldn't be any big
    deal.

    Sure. Be carefull, the fizz has a real complex envelope...

    this sounds like. Is it the archetypal magic marker squeek?

    basically just hold the record key down and punch around. I think
    that's all of 'em off the top o'me head.
