1432.0. "Small Rackmount Mixer and Gear?" by FGVAXZ::LAING (Jim*261-2194*DEC MemorabiliaCollector) Mon Jun 06 1988 15:30

    I am in the process of "racking-up" me setup. I've read some of
    the notes on Rack issues (1116,1105,404). Now, I have a question
    to ask: what is available for SMALL, LIGHTWEIGHT rack devices?

    Specifically, I'm looking for 1/3-wide or 1/2-wide, 1-high units
    similar to Alesis microverb and some Boss effects I've seen. Are
    there any small 1/3 or 1/2-width stereo EQs? Patch bays? Also,
    most line mixers with more than 6 channels seem to be 2-rack spaces.
    I could get a 2-space racked mixer plus 1-space EQ, but does anyone
    make a 2-space, 8-channel racked mixer with maybe a 2-band EQ per
    channel?

    I'm trying to make this rack as small and lightweight as possible!
    To my surprise, I've found that at least 3 companies make a 1-high
    stereo power amp with moderate power (fine for my needs - 75w/ch).

    So far, I have a TX-802 (2 spaces), and microverb (1/3-width, 1-space).
    I want to add these capabilities in the smallest package possible:
    	o mixer, 8ch or more, ideally with some EQ, 1 or 2 space
    	o or, 1-high mixer plus 1-high EQ (Korg makes this EQ)
    	o Power strip, 1-space
    	o Power amp, 1-space

    Are there some more esoteric brands that would include such things
    as 2-space mixer w/EQ? Or any 1-space mixers w/o EQ with 8 channels?
    Or, am I asking for too much in such a small package?

1432.1Korg has a small 6-channel rack mixerHARDY::JKMARTINThe Doctype Police are after me...Mon Jun 06 1988 17:0413
Korg makes (what appears to be) a pretty functional rack mixer, but I forget
whether it's a 1- or 2-high rack.  I don't think it's higher than two spaces.

Anyway, from what I can remember from memory, the unit sells (mail-order) for
about $225 and has 6 channels, each with an effects send. There is also a
master effects return control, as well as (get this!) control voltage capability
to manipulate the channels volumes (from what I can tell).

I forget whether it has EQ or not. If this unit sounds interesting, let me
know and I will enter the ad from the catalog.

1432.2Tascam has an 8-channel rack mixerHARDY::JKMARTINThe Doctype Police are after me...Mon Jun 06 1988 17:055
Oh yeah, of course Tascam makes a 2-high (I think) 8-channel mixer, but it's
pretty stripped down. Goes for about $220, if I remember correctly.

1432.3Got one in the rack...JAWS::COTEAre you buying this at all??Mon Jun 06 1988 17:1312
    re: .1

    I just bought a Korg 602 at Union for $210. It's one space high,
    internal power supply, individual level, pan and FX send for each
    channel, master FX level, master volume. No eq. Nice little LED
    display. Front mounted power switch. No headphone jack.

    If it had the phone jack I'd love it, but it doesn't, so I only
    like it alot.

1432.41-high w/o EQ or 2-high w/ EQ?FGVAXZ::LAINGJim*261-2194*DEC MemorabiliaCollectorMon Jun 06 1988 17:548
    Re .2

    Do you know what the Tascam has? Doesn't have? I've seen the Korg,
    but need 8 channels. Yamaha and Korg have 8- and 12-channel, 2-rack
    units I've seen.  I was hoping (dreaming?) of either a 1-high 8-channel
    w/o EQ, or a 2-high 8-channel w/EQ ...

1432.5I'll look for details on the Tascam unitHARDY::JKMARTINThe Doctype Police are after me...Mon Jun 06 1988 18:1812
re: .-1

I'll put out my catalog and enter the information I find for the Tascam unit.
I don't believe, however, that there is any EQ, and it seems to me that it
looked 2-high (from the picture).

	2-high???

Hmmm... a small pun, at best.

1432.6If you want snap-shot midi mixing, too.PANGLS::BAILEYConstants aren't, variables don'tTue Jun 07 1988 18:438
    Several of the midied mixers are single height. The
    Simmons 8-channel (with eq and all sorts of other nifty features)
    unit--SMX 8:2 (or some such stupid name)--comes to mind.

    It costs, though.

1432.7From the Sublime to the Ridiculous?DRUMS::FEHSKENSWed Jun 08 1988 12:125
    The Simmons is about $1K. The Tascam unit is 2-high, 8 into 2.
    It's *very* basic - channel volume and pan. That's it.
